The basic concept is that a person goes back in time and does something to change his or her future, which in the end would not allow the person to go back in time. At first, this appears to defy logic. I am not going to argue this point one way or another because I am more interested in the entertainment value of this temporal contradiction. The idea that a person can change the present by going into the past has been used in several books, movies, and television shows.
I remember a Star Trek episode in which Bones changed his present by going into the past and saving a woman's life. The City on the Edge of Forever is one of the best episodes in the original Star Trek I have ever viewed. I liked it because it demonstrated the time paradox and the way one person can influence history. It was also a love story with a tragic ending.
How does a writer plan a story or novel that uses the temporal paradox plot? I believe the best way to do this is the answer the questions who, what, when, why, where, and how. Who goes back in time? What are some of the issues that cause the character problems during the journey? When, at what age or historical period, does the character begin his or her time trek? Why does the character want to travel in time? Where in time is the character going? How is the character traveling in time?

Nish Laverz writes referring to the May 22, 2013 newsletter: I have tried to write fan fiction for Stargate SG-1. It is hard to keep the characters how they should be. I have the luxury of owning all 10 series and the 2 tv movies on DVD to use for reference.
panzersherman write: While I agree that dreams may only last for a few seconds to a few minutes, it depends on the view of the person having the dream. To that person, the dream can be in real-time, or it can feel like hours, days, weeks, months, years, or even centuries are passing. The human mind is a strange and fantastic place, isn't it?
BIG BAD WOLF is hopping  write: My Redwall Interactive is something akin to a dream sequence, as the main character's in a Coma. Currently though, I've got an Idea involving a Janitor- Opening scene will be the White House in trouble. Hero shows up, and defeats the bad guys. However, just as he gets the medal, someone shakes his shoulder- it was a dream, and the guy is just a lowly Janitor. However, he soon finds himself leading a counter-assault to save the First Family. I'll tell you no more though. 
Gimlet writes: I recently wrote a Doctor Who Fanfic and have always been into scifi in general. Mostly I've stayed away from Time Travel because of the difficulty in attempting to write convincing stories with Time Paradoxes, or multiple time lines, or fated events. It's hard to get those kind things right.
My personal thought is that Paradoxes don't happen. Either the time machine fails to work if a paradox would happen, leading to any time travel event having already happened, or every time you time travel it branches off another universe with a slightly different history.
What other questions should a writer ask when planning this type of story? Have you ever used this plot in a story?
