Letter from the editor

I am participating in NaNoWriMo this year, so I need to begin planning my novel. The first step to planning my novel is deciding on a subject or theme. This will not be difficult because I have three ideas stored in my port. Two of the ideas concern plots and one is about a character. The only thing I have to do is decide which idea I want to use. I could combine the character with one of the plots, which would take care of two of the six questions I need to answer.

One of the plots is for a fantasy novel, while the other is science fiction. The character's name and description works better in a fantasy novel. How do I choose which idea to use? I plan to use timed free write exercises to answer the six questions. I plan to use an oven timer set for ten to fifteen minutes for each question. Once I begin writing then I continue to write until the timer sounds. This way I can spread the exercises over several days, which will give me a chance to contemplate the plots and the characters.

Where does the novel take place? Who are the characters? What is the conflict occurring in the novel? When does the novel take place? Why do the characters react the way they do to the conflict and each other? How is the conflict resolved? These are the fist questions I want to answer, but I am sure that once I have written my answers other questions will arise. Answering these questions for each of my ideas will help me decide which idea I want to pursue.

Preparing for NaNoWriMo by planning the novel will helps a writer get started and it makes sure that the page is never blank. I know there are other ways to prepare for NaNoWriMo and plan a novel. How do you plan your NaNoWriMo novels? Are you going to participate in NaNoWriMo 2013?

We had been wandering for days, five, to be exact, through the forest, searching for a good place to hold up. It was my idea, and I guess I'm to blame for their frustration, after all, how could I have been sure? How could I have been absolutely, and undeniably positive, that we would be safe? I told Amy that we weren't going to stop; we weren't going to set up camp. Not after Wednesday.

Ask & Answer

Marci Missing Everyone writes: Great suggestion in finding prompts out of everyday happenings. I am definitely going to use some of those techniques!

BIG BAD WOLF is hopping writes: Sometimes I see something, a show on TV, and an idea takes root.

brom21 writes: I’ve found this to be true as well. There are stories everywhere. Just one day of living normal life is packed with ideas. A good example is the clouds. Our imaginations give them life and dimension. Sometimes when the sun shines through them just right, the glorious picture of them, it makes me think of angels and heave where they live. Architecture also inspires me. Their creative appeal makes me think of magical cities and enchanted beings where they live. Even the most mundane things such as being in an elevator can spark the imagination.

Shaara writes: That cell phone was obviously being used to watch T.V. Which means, that some alien has connected with you personally. He/she isn't telling you so, though. You probably won't get to know for the next thousand years (these particular aliens have long life-expectancies and will assume you do, too.) Anyway, that poor alien got so involved in the TV program, he forgot to recharge the juice he used.

Saturn silliwoggles. Can't you imagine the trouble that alien's in? Right now, they're punishing him -- making him eat ice cream for 24 hours straight. His teeth (and he has four hundred of them) are in pain. His head is pounding -- you know that ice cream headache when you try to eat something really, really cold too fast? And the worse of it all is that he doesn't get any broccoli today because he has to eat all that ice cream. And he loves broccoli.

All because you put you cell phone down and turned on the TV. Now don't you feel bad?

Great newsletter. LOL

Shaara
