There are important differences between contemporary and historical fiction that aspiring historical authors ignore. The most important mistake writers make is they worry readers might not like characters who exhibit prejudices of their time. However, flawed characters who gain the readers' sympathy and understanding despite their flaws are a key element of good fiction set in any time period. It is simple fact that people who lived in the past had very different attitudes about many aspects of life than we do today.One of the biggest flaws in many historical romances is that the characters don't behave like typical people from their era.
Historical fiction falls flat when the characters seem like modern men and women dressed up in fancy costumes. Inaccuracies can be subtle, yet damaging. For example, if all Frontier Men and Women were to treat all Native Americans fairly, or if British lords and ladies were kind to Irish servants, then you are neglecting the historical context of your story. In addition, you could be sacrificing potential drama that could help flesh out your story.
When you write a historical story/novel, remember that you're writing about another era. The culture is often as alien as what you'll find in a science fiction novel. In all too many historical romances set during the Regency era, the courting couple often go off together, alone. But this was simply not done at that time. A couple going off unchaperoned would create a huge scandal. Proper women simply wouldn't allow such liberties.
