Does My Character HAVE to Fall in Love?
It seems like every Action/Adventure story involves some kind of romance. Is this a necessary thing?
Every action/adventure story seems to include some kind of love interest, or unrequited love, or some other way that the character makes a connection with another character. I imagine that some of you might find it interesting to write a story that does NOT include a "love connection", so to speak. I will include ways that this can happen, and the reason that love is such a prominent thing in so many stories.
Just the other day, I started watching one of the new television shows named "Betrayal". I have to admit that I was not in any way impressed with the show - it started with two people who seemed to be with other people... immediately feeling a love connection, and the very slow process it took as they started to connect.
In order for love to be added into a story that isn't a romance, it needs to be done well. It can't be the main focus of the story, but it would need to be some kind of drive for the character. Whether the love is unrequited, or it is something that is returned, for it to make sense, it needs to have some struggles of its own.
A great example of this is the books by David and Leigh Eddings. Two of the characters in the Belgaraid are thrown together in an arranged marriage, are following some sort of prophecy that they are having to figure out as they go, and are having to dodge people trying to kill them the entire way there. At the beginning they accomplish all of this despite them fighting like cats and dogs with one another. It's fun, it's hilarious at times, and it seems to fit the story. The book doesn't feel like a romance to me, it feels like action/fantasy - which is what it is supposed to be.
I think love exists in so many stories, because most people feel "complete" when they love someone. It's a natural human emotion. They impose that upon their characters.
However, I think it is important to remember that not all characters should have to love. Especially in an Action/Adventure. The main character's obsession could (and most likely, should) be about something completely different from love. They could be work-focused, and simply aren't open to even thinking about a relationship. They could be incapable of feelings, for whatever reason. Their obsession could be a place, or a thing, or the desperation to recover or find something.
So... does your character HAVE to fall in love? No. No, they don't. But make sure that, if they don't, there is something that fills that void. That character needs something that consumes them - if love isn't it (and having stories without love being "it" is actually refreshing), make it something awesome. And have fun! Just make sure that, at the end, you don't leave your readers going, "...That's it?"
