Sweeping Up
In the next few weeks, a lot of writers will be talking about NaNoWriMo . If you're participating, good luck! (Or do we say "Break a pencil!", I'm not sure.) If you don't have the time to commit or the stamina to wring out a story in a month, consider our site contests. A lot of the regular participants will be busy penning a novel in November. Now's your chance! You can sweep in and enter those contests with a different set of contestants. Some of the regulars will be busy wresting with sub-plots and runaway characters and you will be lining your coffers with piles of gift points. A nice pile of gift points could be handy come Christmas or time to renew your membership.
If you're a new member, this is a great time to try entering a contest. Figuring out the b-item thing, learning how to post an entry and practicing reviewing is essential to an active member, so give it a try. Everyone is quite helpful and if you can't figure something out, ask someone! Asking is much easier than struggling along on your own.
This would also be a good time to set up and format a new item. During the first couple months of the year, you could debut a spectacular new contest or activity. This would give you some time to build up your prize bank, find some fun items to give away and locate judges if you need them. A good contest host is well prepared. You'll have time to get your page shining and organized, which in turn brings in more competition. Good organization allows you to enjoy running the contest instead of correcting mistakes, adding rules and sorting out confused entrants.
So, if you're a flash fiction or short story writer, take a peek at our contests and activities. There could be something just waiting for you to enter.

Come be inspired and challenge yourself in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please note that your entry doesn't have to be necessarily 'light'. Your story can venture to the 'dark-side' so to speak, for different people have different reactions to the disease. This month's question: If you don't participate in NaNoWriMo, what do you do in the month of November?
Last month's question: Do you review other entries in contests you're participating in? Would you help another contestant if they forgot a word count or bitem??
Elle - on hiatus  responded: I don't usually make a point of reviewing other entries if I enter a contest, but I would definitely point out to a member that they forgot a word count or incorrectly posted their entry, even if they were competing directly against me.
Dawn Embers  answered: To be honest, I rarely review other entries in a contest I am entering as most of my reviewing comes from ones I am judging. However, I have helped with people who have link and word count issues or prompt questions that I felt I could answer. I try to help when I can.
Jaeff | KBtW of the Free Folk  replied: I usually don't read other entries until my own has been submitted, but on those rare occasions when I actually turn something in ahead of time (and believe me, they are rare!  ), I'll check out my competition and try to review as many as I can. I will definitely point out anything that would disqualify an entry... there's nothing worse than being disqualified for an overlooked requirement or missed rule, so if I can save someone that anguish, it's an added bonus.

blue jellybaby  sent: Sure, I did it a lot during the birthday week too and I'd be happy to help out anyway I thought I could whether it was how they'd entered the contest or if there was a typo. No matter that it's a contest I think helping someone improve and perfect their writing is the goal

Jellyfish-on holiday  says: I often read and review other people's contest entries for contests I am thinking about entering or do enter - sometimes I find this gives me inspiration for my own entry. In addition, if I'm interested in the contest theme it is likely that the entries will appeal to me. |
