My Tush is Asleep

Oh don't say it doesn't happen to you. We all get busy writing or poking around on the internet and next thing you know, you can't feel your legs.

Let's say this newsletter is about activity more than contests this month. I'm sure some of the NaNoWriMo writers can agree, sometimes it's hard to sit in front of the computer and create. So why are you sitting there? Get yourself a little notebook, or the back of an envelope or something and move. I do my best thinking when I'm cooking, so the grocery list notepad gets more notes about writing than food. But, whatever works.

The point is, when writing for your novel, or a prompt for a contest, you don't have to sit down and think. The brain is attached to the body and has a tendency to go wherever you go, so go! Walk the dog and speak ideas into your phone. Go camping, fishing, horseback riding...okay, maybe hard to take notes on a horse...but you get the idea. Sitting and staring at a blank screen on your computer gets you eyestrain and not much more.

Once you have some fresh ideas saved in your phone or in a notebook, sit or lay somewhere comfortable and expand on your ideas. Do some free-writing and add scenes and characters to your notes. Then when it's finally time to sit down at the computer, you have something to reference and work on. This helps with computer chair back pain and numb legs.

But before you leave, take a look at some of the contests and activities listed below, and see what you might enter.

Excerpt: Each month, beginning December 1, 2013 (due to the November NaNoWriMo event), we'll explore a different genre and maybe even dip our toes into the pool of sub-genres and off-the-beaten-path genres. We'll explore fiction and non-fiction avenues as we ultimately strive to take our craft as writers to the next level.
