Reflections on 2013
Reflection. It helps you see where you were, where you are going, and where you stand on your goals. I started this year creating a poetry form, and ended it working on submitting my work to publishers again, but we’ll get back to that.
I saw a picture once that showed a picture within a picture within a picture. It had to do with mirrors and the reflections in it. It reminded me about a saying that the definition of insanity was to continue to do the same thing and expecting different results. Looking at the picture made me think about a person falling into this pit of insanity of the same thing repeated over and over into infinity.
So, let’s go back to me and my self-reflection. I started this year out with these goals. I always think they are attainable and soon find out that real life has other ideas and I lose focus, falter, then miss my goals. Remember that insanity thing? I want different results. I started to do something different a few months ago. I’m using WDC’s Weekly Goals ("Weekly Goals" [13+]) to help me maintain my focus. Had I continued as I had before this accountability tool I would not have sent out my work to publishers again.
I’m not sure if my submissions will be accepted, but I do know that I have made the first step (again) and will continue to make steps towards my goals, rather than faltering (again).
In the spirit of reflection I found poetry terms that reminded me of the repeated picture. Many poetry forms utilize repeated lines, phrases or words, like the pantoum, terzanelle, chant, etc. Here are some terms you can use to refer to this repetition:
Anaphora - Repeated word/phrase at the beginning of lines in a poem.
Epistrophe - Repeated word/phrase at the end of lines in a poem.
Refrain/Burden – Repetition of a line/lines of poetry. “like the [chorus] of a song, especially at the end of a [stanza]” (Drury, 237).
Repetend - Random repetition.
Repeton – Interlocking repetition (e.g. pantoum, terzanelle).
