Letter from the editor

This month's column is for the Newbies--those members who have been with us for 30 days or less.

Duh, that's pretty obvious, Jace. *Rolleyes*

And this article is for all you seasoned members on WDC.

Okay, for all those who are thinking I've completely lost my mind, bear with me for a moment. With the advent of the new year, I'm taking stock of one of my favorite duties as a Moderator--writing for the official WDC newsletters. This topic has been discussed before--"WDC Newsletters and "Newsletters: Information for the Masses to name two--but it bears repeating from time to time.

I've been a full-time editor of this newsletter since 29 June 2011, and this is my 34th Noticing Newbies newsletter. I've been fortunate to have written articles for seven of the thirteen newsletters. I have a goal of writing an article for each of the official newsletters. (There! It's written down. Now it's a proper goal.) *Delight*

Writing.Com currently has 8 Senior Moderators and 88 Moderators, many of whom have written for one of the 13 weekly official WDC newletters. Remember we're volunteers and the opinions we express are our own. We have a good bit of collective knowledge about Writing.Com and writing in general. Not everything, for sure. But I believe we help more than we hinder. *Wink*

New folks to WDC may not know about the wealth of information available in the weekly newsletters. Then again, you may have signed up for one of more NLs when you created your membership. If you haven't and are unsure how to sign up, or just wish to change your choices, check out "Newsletter Settings for information on how to update your settings. As Sara♥Jean says, you don't have to keep these choices forever.

You also may find that you have entirely too much reading to do if you signed up for a number of these pubs. You don't have to subscribe to a newsletter to read it, though having it appear in your email each week certainly is convenient. Under Things to Do & Read in the Navigation Menu, click on the link Newsletter Archives. This lists the current week's official newsletters as well as back issues for each newsletter category.

Not sure where to find a specific topic? Entering a keyword in the Search window should highlight a listing of past newsletters on that subject. Be as specific as you can to narrow the search.

Finally, change your selections periodically to keep you current on all manner of topics, and to stimulate your mind in new ways. Variety is the spice of life and the source of new ideas for your writing.

Newsletters offer the key to a wealth of information on writing and about Writing.Com. But now you know you don't need to have 13 newsletters delivered each and every week to your email to access that info. Let WDC store those informational tidbits for you.

Ask & Answer

From the mailbox about a previous Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Are You Jaded in Your Writing?.

From glynisj: Jace, I have a feeling that my writing tastes are a little jaded. It isn't so much with genre or style though. I have yet to write even a full page of a story in anything but 3rd person.

Have you considered writing a shorter story for a contest such as "The Writer's Cramp? Perhaps you can break out of that 3d person mold with something in the 1st person.

And some mail about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Can You Afford to Upgrade?.

From Christine : I just wanted to say how excited I am that I have submitted my first short story. I entered a contest and can't wait to get viewers opinions! I am proud to be a part of your community.

Congratulations. I wish you the best of luck with your submission. Getting involved is so much more fun and rewarding than sitting back and waiting for something to happen. *Wink*

From Quick-Quill : Every year since I joined in 2007 I have used GPS to pay for my memberships. I would not have made it past the first months if someone hadn't gifted me a upgraded membership for 3 months. I have had to supplement some $ if I got to the end and didn't have enough GPS to make the renewal. Usually it meant going without somewhere else. I took my Christmas money and added that to all my reviewing Gps and I am now a premium member. I will have to review like mad to earn enough to have another 6 months of premium. I will do it though! Thanks to all who donated to my cause.

Great attitude! I've no doubt you'll renew before your time runs out. *Smile*

From The Run-on King PDG Member : You know I agree with you on reviewing. I am currently doing the weekly goals and by doing them I set a goal to do three reviews a day one for each of the groups I joined. Yesterday is a great example of how this site pays you back for being active.

The site decided to do a "36 hour review the reviewer challenge" you have to pick 10 reviewers you like and give them gp and tell the Story Master and Story Mistress why you picked them. I picked out ten and shelled out 2.5k of my own gp.

Now the first thing you would think well there just went 1.5k gp I can use else where right? The challenge pays 1k to do it. Since I had seven reviews in the system I got back 12k plus the 2.5k I shelled out. That is twice now that has happened to me I always make gp on those challenges next time I think I'll give out more just to return it back to the community and make someone's day.

My point to all this is if your reviewing when they run that challenge your going to be rewarded not just by us people doing the challenge but also by several reviewing groups like "The Art of Criticism" and "Reviewing Reviewers"

The other way I make gp is by doing the "Good Deeds get Cash" program They really pay you if your active you can even earn badges as well. The Newbie Academy will also help you learn reviewing as well as pay you extra gp for each review you do over 250 letters.

Take it from this newbie I just read the stories and tell them the truth about what worked for me and what didn't and any grammar and misspelled words in a nice way. I am proud to be a WDC newbie and of my association with "The Newbie Academy."

I knew I wasn't the only one rewarded for reviewing. *Delight* Keep up the great work.
