Advertise with Newsfeed

Should you use the Newsfeed to advertise your and other activities?

The Newsfeed   is still a relatively new addition to the many ways Writing.Com helps us to create a community. Similar to social networking sites, the Newsfeed can be used for just about any type of message. Those messages can be personal, funny, weird, quirky, and even let others know for sure just how crazy we are.

Besides being a fun way to exchange bits from the private life or writing life with the community, it is also a useful tool to advertise your activities, contests, and anything else that you want to announce to the community.

The Newsfeed has two settings.

One is the setting where the messages you see will only come from members that you have chosen as favorites. You can choose any member on the site as one of your favorites by clicking on the + next to their handle. In that way, you will get a notification in the form of a number above your Newsfeed. This number increases with every new post somebody made that you have favorited.

The other setting is the Community Newsfeed. The icon for that is a little globe with "Community Newsfeed" next to it. When you click on that, you can see every single Newsfeed item that any member on the site has posted. Checking that out can be a veritable treasure trove. You might discover somebody with a quirky sense of humor. Somebody who writes in the same genres as you. Even somebody who chose a neat Costumeicon. No matter what attracts your attention at first, you can enlarge your circle of friend by clicking on the + next to anybody's handle and they will get added to your personal Newsfeed notifications.

How is the Newsfeed relevant to Contests & Activities? It is very relevant.

Pros to using the Newsfeed:
*Bulletb* A huge number of activity and contest hosts have started using the Newsfeed as a venue to advertise what is going on with them and it has become a place of communication around those activities.
*Bulletb* Questions and answers about activities can be posted to the Newsfeed and become available to everybody else.

Cons to using only the Newsfeed:
*Bulletb* It moves fast and things quickly get lost in the shuffle and therefore the advertisement was only available to a few members.
*Bulletb* Excessive posts only about your activities get boring after a while and members may stop following you.
*Bulletb* Your message is mainly limited to those who follow you and the few who go search in the Community Newsfeed.

How about advertising for others? Personally, I think it's perfectly okay to send out a bulletin if you know of a cool activity that you want to champion. This should not become an automatic re-post of everything you see. If you find five activities you want to highlight, put them all into one post.

So, should you use the Newsfeed   to advertise what you are doing? Yes. Absolutely. Please do. But don't forget to also post on Activities   and Contests
