Speak to Me about Poetry: Poetry forms about poetry or in answer to a poem

The three poetry forms are less formal and are more genre-type forms. This means you can choose to employ a more formal form with these forms, if you like.

Ars Poetica

Ars Poetica is poetry that is about poetry and poets. It can range from definitions of poetry, and instructions for writing poetry to your own personal views about poetry, and how poets should behave (Drury, 28).

Brief History

Over two thousand years ago Horace wrote his Ars Poetica, which you can read here: http://www.classicpersuasion.org/pw/horace/horacepo.htm.

Must Haves

- Must be about poetry (definitions, instructions, etc.), poets (behavior, thoughts, etc.), or poetic analysis.

Could Haves or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

- Can rhyme or not (unless you employ a standardized form, eg. sonnet, then you follow the form’s rhyme scheme).
- Can be any number of lines, stanzas (unless you are using another form with your ars poetica, as stated above).
- Can have any meter, including no set meter (same as above).
- Many poets name their ars poetica poems “Ars Poetica,” however it is your choice what you name your poem.

Anti-poem

Think of an anti-poem as a rebel with a cause. It rebels one or more aspects of poetry. This could be poetry in general or a specific type of poetry form (eg. sonnet). This doesn’t mean you write an anti-sonnet and just randomly change the rules for the sonnet. Be deliberate about it (Drury, 27).

Must Haves

- Must rebel against at least one aspect of poetry or a poetry form.

Could Haves or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

- Can rhyme or not (unless you employ a standardized form, eg. sonnet, then you follow the form’s rhyme scheme).
- Can be any number of lines, stanzas (unless you use another form, as stated above).
- Can have any meter, including no set meter (same as above).

Response Poem

A response poem is a poetic reaction. It can take several forms: responding to or answering another poem (there are several here at writing.com), reaction to an event (ex. 9/11), or to a thing (ex. chocolate tacos). It can also be an answer or reply to something read in general other than poetry (Drury, 241-242).

Must Haves

- Must be a response or an answer to a poem, event, person, thing, etc.

Could Haves or What's The Poet's Choice In All This?

- Many choices on your response: can be on the same topic/same POV, same topic/new POV, can be an answer, a reaction to something/someone, etc.
- Can rhyme or not (unless you employ a standardized form, eg. sonnet, then you follow the form’s rhyme scheme).
- Can be any number of lines, stanzas (unless you use another form, as stated above).
- Can have any meter, including no set meter (same as above).
