Letter from the editor

How often do you have those moments where you stare at a blank screen or a blank sheet of paper and all the ideas you had so recently evaporate so quickly that it leaves you feeling empty as if all the knowledge you had just, disappeared? How many times did you get frustrated with yourself and just felt like giving up? And let's not even mention a review that's more critical than you'd like and you feel as if you've failed as a writer!

Before you throw away your pen, play basketball with your blank sheets and the trash can, or click on that tiny x in the upper right hand corner, consider why you wanted to write in the first place.

What makes you want to write?

For me, a good prompt can bring out a story I never knew existed! A name pops out at me and that character just takes it from there - my fingers only do the typing without knowing where the story is actually headed. Unlike a genre, prompts or specific ideas close in on you and keep you more focused. Not everyone can write like that. Some people prefer to know the genre, because it gives them a bigger range of things to write about. It's almost like you give them a pillow and then rip it apart, searching for the right feather that will get their story going. Then again, there's me with one feather but no pillow to keep me cramped in. Everyone requires something different to give them that push.

And yet, that one review can shatter your world and you question yourself. Are you a good writer? Should you even write? Do you even have a story to tell? So, here you are, nothing to show for and on top of that, you're doubting your own ability. Quit! No, quit thinking like that. Don't quit writing. Everyone has stories to tell - be they good or bad. But to get you started, you have to write anything until you stumble upon that one story that will make things happen for you. So what if the past ten books you wrote are considered trash?! Who cares?! I bet you learned something while writing each one.

Don't ever doubt yourself. You're not writing for anyone else but yourself. You are important and your writing is important to you. Write! Anything! Write about how you hate not being able to write sometimes. Even writing about a critical review could get you to write something worth while.

Blog! I of all people should recommend such a thing because I'm horrible at it, but to me blogging is like a free session with a psychiatrist. It relieves my stress because I can get things off my chest, it's still considered writing something, it shows emotions more powerful than just poking around a page trying to include the right ones at the right time, and no one can judge me for it. Let your fingers do the writing for you. Don't think too much about it.

So! If your writing is important to you, you won't just expect a masterpiece the second you put words onto paper or type them on the screen. The process of writing hurts in more ways than one. I know that what one person might consider trash, it might be treasure to another. You never know. Your writing is your own treasure. Hone it, protect it, but if you're truly honest with yourself, let it expand. And most important advice of all I can give you, don't hide your characters in the closet of your brain. Let them out each night, before you fall asleep, and watch. Sooner or later, they won't hide when you sit there with nothing to write about. They'll jump on your pages the way they were always supposed to.
