Letter from the editor

When you start writing, where do you begin? Do you just jump into the story or develop your characters first? My guess is, it depends on the story itself. Sometimes, characters jump out at you without waiting for you to actually create them.

What about using real life instances as part of your story? Are you one of the many who love to just sit there and observe others? People can be simple at times but more often than not they are very complex. The same can be said about your characters.

In my own observations, ever since my husband and I moved I've noticed quite a few changes in myself even. Without the Internet, WdC, and the time to write, I feel as if I've lost a part of myself. Those around me don't understand what it's like because their mind is not filled with story plots at every corner they turned.

The people I'm surrounded by are regular people, nothing out of the ordinary, but ever since we jumped into this new family business it's been taken a toll on everyone. Each person is stressed out that all they do is snap at each other. And yet, I don't have my WdC escape in order to get that moment of peace. What I do have is time to observe how one persons actions affect the others. It turns into a chain reaction until it finally bursts into flames and burns out into ashes.

So what makes our characters different from us? Other than the occasional murder, not much. They feel and react just as we do. Cutting their emotions short doesn't help our stories. We read to escape, but we read things we can relate to and only characters who are similar to us can make the stories come alive.

Perhaps, next time you're at a dinner table or a family gathering, you'll end up watching and observing the others interact with each other. What happens I'd you throw a stone into the water? Does it just sink to the bottom or does it create more than one ripple? *Wink*
