Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Draco from Upon a Moon Dark Moor. Robin Hood. What do all these men have in common? They're romantic anti-heroes. So what's the appeal of a romantic anti-hero?

Letter from the editor

An anti-hero is someone the reader roots for, but is very flawed. Anti-heroes aren't noble or honest. They generally lack integrity or compassion. A traditional romantic hero embodies all those traits.

What causes the anti-hero's flaws? Most have a tragic history and emotional scars. In order to write an accurate anti-hero, a writer has to really flesh out their back story to know what makes them tick. A good tool for this is to use a character bio to fill in the blanks.

Remember: an anti-hero is not a rebel who won't follow rules. He has to have reasons to act the way he does. He has to have a reason to be troubled. Keep in mind they aren't role models. Self interest and self preservation are big motivating factors for them. Honesty doesn't drive them, but revenge might.

So why root for the romantic anti-hero? He's handsome, his stare is mesmerizing, he's a man of few words, and committed to his goal. He's never been in love (though he might have had previous relationships), but it's this love which inspires hope in him. They're willing to give love a reluctant chance, but will throw it away without a second chance if the going gets too tough.

Our books and movies are full of anti-heroes: Jack Sparrow, Haymitch Abernathy (from the Hunger Games) and Severus Snape are just a few.

Question for you: Who is your favorite anti-hero? What's the appeal?
