Happy Spooktober! October is one of the scariest nights of the year. Halloween is full of ghouls, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and witches. Prior to Anne Rice, gothic romance set the tone for October, but when Rice wrote about her vampires, those foul, blood-sucking creatures became popular – and romanticized. Now, contemporary paranormal romances embrace vampires and werewolves. So what does it to take romance a witch? |

Historical Look 
Witches and witchcraft have been around since before Christ from Egypt to Russia, Baghdad to Ireland. From the beginning, witches were known to be wise women, full of cunning.
Tip #1: To romance a witch, (male or female) you should probably have an hero/heroine just as cunning and clever as a witch.
In America, the most famous witches were found in Salem, MA. In Spain, during the Inquisition, witches were hunted and persecuted. A famous witch of note: Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for being a witch because she claimed she heard the message of God. Now, she's no longer a witch, but a Saint in the Catholic Church.
Witches in a historical context were known to be women, but they can also be men. A male witch might be known as a wizard or a warlock.
These historical witches were known to cast spells, wear black, brew potions, have black cats and used magic for evil purposes – i.e. worshiping the devil.
Historical witches such as these paint a picture of physical ugliness but sometimes, one can be very pretty and ugly on the inside.
As religion grew and became adopted by communities around the world, witches went underground, passing on their knowledge in secret.
Tip #2: To romance a witch, be sure you can keep a secret. 
Contemporary Witches 
With the popularity of vampires, werewolves, and shape shifter romances, witches have come to be seen in a new light. The black hats are off and they're out of the broom closet so to speak.
Magic is a neutral force, so it's the witch's choice to use it for good or evil. Magic involves the movement of energy, traditionally used in spells.
Tip #3: To romance a witch, don't be freaked out when they use magic.
Witches have medicinal understanding of herbs, roots, and flowers.
Tip #4: To romance a witch, don't be afraid if they want to heal you using more "earthy" remedies.
It takes a special person to romance a witch. They make a good match for a vampire or werewolf. Witches understand the need to keep secrets. They can use their medicinal talents to ease a vampire or werewolf's pain. There's no limit to the magic a witch can do but your imagination. These dynamic and versatile characters can add a lot of spice to a well-written paranormal romance.

The first one that comes to mind is Hugh Laurie in House. We loved how he always won but we hated his arrogance, his addictive personality and how he treated his co-workers. He is the anti-hero personified.
