Save the Contests

Contests are only fun when there is a real competition.

With November and that one month long writing palooza called NaNoWriMo coming up, the crowd should by now be firmly divided into those who will and those who won't. Spend the next month hammering out a minimum of 50,000 words, that is.

To those of you who are industriously prepping for NaNo, you have my respect. Now's not the time to get lost in too many other things. Just as in all races, those who didn't prepare well enough are the most likely to fail or fall out of the race before the finishing line. It's true of running marathons, writing marathons, and those mud-races that have become so popular.

For all other writers not participating in NaNoWriMo, this is a great time to sink your teeth into some less threatening daily writing activities. There is Daily Flash Fiction, Writer's Cramp, weekly, and monthly contests.
