Time to Clean House
It's coming to the end of the year and if you're like me, you like to make resolutions for the new year. It's a whole different matter whether or not you keep them...but it's fun to think about what you might like to accomplish in the upcoming months. One of them, for me, is to clean up my portfolio. If my portfolio were a garden, I would be ripping out old dead plants and chasing leaves with the blower. But what I will do in my port is clean out the old contest entries that didn't go anywhere and tidy up my contest and activity pages.
If it is a forum, sometimes cleaning out some of the old posts is necessary. I like to start with a fresh version, taking out all the old entry listings, checking my reference links to make sure they are still linking to an actual page. If you do a contest for each season, consider making a template and keeping it in your portfolio so you don't have to reformat each season.
Think about sorting your items, perhaps keeping all your poetry in one folder, or sorting all your award winning entries in to one place. The advantage of having an upgraded portfolio is being able to keep your items organized and direct readers to the items they most want to review. While a free ten slot portfolio is a great start and anyone can use, after a decade, I need a little more space. Even then, it's good to clean house once in a while and toss out the deadwood.
So take a look at your portfolio and see if you can get a head start on the resolution season, give it a good dusting! Write on!

This activity is open to both traditional (6 months or less) and non-traditional newbies (older account but only recently became active in the community). Any new person who does not have a portfolio awardicon is eligible.
If you're interested and you can commit a chunk of your time for the six month period, and if you have a strong drive to improve as an author, please send me an email!
What is free form or free verse poetry? Well, the formal definition is poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set fixed metrical pattern. But the exact definition is written by the poet. Free form poetry has become the favored form for new and experienced poets alike. It provides the freedom of creativity, without the structure of traditional poetry.
However, it is deceptive in its simplicity, and can actually be very difficult. Do you have the skill to conquer this form of poetic expression? Have you mastered this art? Or do you just want to see if you are on the right track? This contest will put those skills to the test, and give you valued feedback from qualified judges. The prizes aren't bad either.

Last month's question: What genres would you like to see in upcoming contests, and why?
Indelible Ink  answered: I enjoy contests where there are a mixture of genres; where at least two or three are required. "Randomly generated" works just fine, because the more incompatible the genres appear, the more the mind has to work to tie the little devils together. My brain is exhausted already.
Steve adding writing to ntbk.  replied: Thank you for featuring a couple of groups I know and love well. Those I reviewed I indicated your featuring them here. For me the genre I'd like to see more of is poetry; acrostics specifically; because I love the genre and can with inspiration create an acrostic out of most any set of words. I specialize in using peoples names but enjoy other ways of utilizing the genre. |
