A Look Back to Move Forward


Welcome to 2015!

Thousands of words are being penned in Blogs, newsletters, emails, and letters on the subject of new year's resolutions. So why should this newsletter be any different?

For one thing, I'm unique. *Smile* My experiences, just like yours, makes me so. I thought I might just have a perspective on this subject you may not have considered.

What's the one thing that 95% (of course I made up that number ... but I'll bet it's not too far off) of new year's resolutions have in common? They fall by the wayside within one, two or three months into the year. This has nothing to do with you being lazy, or shallow, or unorganized. On the contrary. I believe such well-intentioned goals grind to a halt because of life.

Don't bite off more than you can chew. Time is running out. You've got other fish to fry. You win some; you lose some. Enough cliches. You get the picture. *Smirk*

My point? You're a writer. Or, you want to be. You're also a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, brother, sister, employer, employee. In short, you have a hundred things competing for your time. And, I'm in that same boat.

Take a moment and look back to your list of last year's resolutions. Did you have any that you achieved? Any that you followed through with all year? How many were never accomplished? Use the past to avoid repeating your weaknesses. Maybe one resolution from last year needs to be on 2015's list.

Pace yourself. Don't just identify your writing related goals. List each and every goal you wish to achieve this year. Prioritize them. Pick the top five (or whatever number you feel confident about doing). Are any of your writing goals on this top priority list? These should be your writing goals for 2015. You may only have one or two. But they will be achievable. And isn't that what you really want?

I guess I better quit while I'm ahead. Life goes on after all! *Wink*
