The quote A penny saved is a penny earned. by Benjamin Franklin is true, but here on Writing.com, for some of us  , it's a very hard thing to do. And yet, you can fund your quarterly or even yearly membership by being here, reading and reviewing.
 Reviewing: It's the most important thing on this site. In order to have your items read and get feedback, you have to do the same. That's why we're all here - to share our stories and poetry with others, but it goes both ways. Other than good advice and writing experience, here's a way how you can earn Gift Points:
 A review of 250+ characters is good, but you want to strive for more than that. A helpful review may get you some points from that person personally, because they felt it was useful.
If you review any items offering Gift Points for a review, it means the second you complete your review, certain amount of GPs (Gift Points) will be transferred to you automatically. Please, do keep in mind that the person is looking for constructive criticism and therefore offering extra GPs for a review, so be honest and helpful. Do not abuse this system of awarding.
Clicking on the word Review on the left side will pop up random items to review and will have a GP award if the review is done in a particular time frame.
Depending on your reviews, their helpfulness and sometimes even the structure of it, you may receive Review Requests. Those are requested by other WdC members who are willing to pay the amount you're asking for because, when they look through your past reviews, they see how much time you put into a review and your willingness to help others improve. They feel that your review would help them further their own writing.
If you belong to reviewing groups, they also pay extra for each review you do.
To top all that off, as long as your reviews are public, other people can see it and if they see the effort you put into a review, they might reward you with extra GPs at random!
As Legerdemain pointed out in the last newsletter, don't forget to check the box for "Good Deeds Get CASH!" when you do your reviews to be added into the drawing to win real cash!
Furthermore, you can also earn extra GPs by entering contests! Most contests give away a little bit of everything: Gift Points, Merit Badges, Awardicons. Find the contests that best suit your writing style and give it a chance. There are so many out there! They might inspire a great story or poem, or might challenge you which is a reward in itself, but if you win, then the rewards are even higher. Same goes for the WdC official contests, except they reward you with cash! Keep in mind, you can always decide to have the cash as a GP reward which will be deposited into your WdC account straight away.
And last but not least, the IM games from Scroll! If you enter scroll, you get to chat with other active WdC members. The games pop up at random, thanks to The StoryMaster and if you win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place you get some extra GPs! Sometimes it may be a distraction, but if you've hit a writer's block, this may come in handy. I should know.
So, you see, the possibilities are plenty, you just have to put in some work.

Thanks for commenting, Steph! It is hard to explain to people why you have to disqualify them and you may end up being the bad guy in the end, but rules are rules. It's not usually hard to follow them if one cares to read through them.

That said, I can't imagine making a contest of my own. Sounds like too much!
Running a contest does require a lot of attention but it can be rewarding. As for entries, it's the challenge in writing something short yet worth while. Many times I've wrote a short story and after the contest ended up expanding it to my liking. It's not about the win, but about ideas sometimes.
