Be Precise

Give clear instructions and answer questions.

In building a contest or activity page, you will have some specific ideas in mind. Let those who want to participate know exactly what their tasks are in as few words as possible. Sounds like a tall order? Well, you're a writer. Put your mind to it. *Wink*

Some contests or activities are more involved than others, and that is a good thing. It builds community and can be a lot of fun. As you come up with your idea, ask yourself how much time others will have to invest to participate and what rules you want them to follow.

Give a clear set of guidelines that include:

*BulletG* Beginning and end date of the activity or round.

*BulletG* Word count limits.

*BulletG* Prizes or prices.

*BulletG* Topic of contest or reason for activity.

Finally, if somebody asks you a question about your page as a forum post or email, answer as soon as possible. Aside from answering that member, ask yourself if that question was unique to that person or if it points out a flaw in your page, in which case you not only have to answer back to that member, but also edit your contest/activity page so it's more clear for everybody.

Ask & Answer

In response to my last newsletter "Success on Writing.Com, which was my last as a regular editor, I got the following replies:

StephBee - House Targaryen wrote: You'll be missed. I always enjoyed your newsletter. Great finish with how to measure success. All the best to you in your future endeavors.

alysia wrote: Thank you for this reminder. My success is in my writing and reviewing, if I write or review that day. Not in case color or recognition- although, to be honest that is a nice asset. Thanks again for this positive newsletter and the reminder on what's really important!

Quick-Quill wrote: I have no idea why to RACK up comm points. I was dormant the first couple of years 2007-2009 but as I began to take classes, read and review "I" grew as a writer. I cannot begin to commend those who have read, reviewed and helped me become a better writer. I found my inspiration here and wrote a book that's been published. If I'd won that big lottery I'd have sponsered WDC for years, but I didn't, so my thanks is all I can give. Along with praise as I pass the site on to other writers I meet.

JACE - House Targaryen wrote: Excellent newsletter, Miss Octobersun. This is worth remembering, especially for those of us who've been here for some time now. I'll have to work on this. *Wink*

ANN Counselor, Lesbian & Happy wrote: you are so right; we came for a reason and it's up to us to fulfil it. Those who came to stir up trouble are quickly exited maybe not by their oown desire. those here to learn about writing and the world, learn. I've met my goals and so very happy with writing.com. thank you for all you have done through this newsletter. ann

ladeecaid wrote: I totally agree. This is a great site for writers in all stages. I have learned more here than I have learned in years.

Elle - on hiatus wrote: An excellent newsletter. I agree about measuring success by what your own goals, not by a number next to your name, well said. *Thumbsup*

Sum1 wrote: I will miss your newsletters Giselle. Stay in touch, okay?

Thank you each of you for the kind words. I've enjoyed writing this newsletter, and as today's issue shows, I can't fully turn away from it.
