Letter from the editor

Change happens often, yet every time something becomes different it causes drama. We should almost expect things to not stay the same sometimes in order to save ourselves the trouble but that never seems to work. At my job we recently went through yet another change, a sudden one too as they did what I am calling the "boss swap" and changed managers in many locations. This is the second time in less than a year we've had a boss change, but it's a big deal because the old drama and conflicts will now be managed under someone else. The chips haven't all landed yet but we'll see how things turn out after a few weeks.

However, since I had a newsletter to write, it did get me thinking about change and how it can cause drama.

One of the things that happens often times in a story with drama, action and/or adventure, is that the main characters regular life suffers a drastic change creating a conflict they have to endure. Whether it's the start of an epic fantasy or young adult contemporary tale, having something important in the main character's life change is one way to get in drama and grab the reader's attention.

The start isn't the only place to include change in a story. In the middle, things can change and that tends to cause problems for people/characters. Sometimes the stakes need raised or a trail has to prove false. Adding a change can twist the plot or force a character into a different dramatic situation.

On the occasion, near the end also can work for change though it can be harder to pull off because without at least some foreshadowing, the reader may not like a change at that point in the story. Sometimes the twist near the end can work well but it's not something to draw on often or expect readers to always appreciate.

Caution: Sudden change can cause problems for some readers. While change does help create conflict, one has to be careful in how they craft the change into a story if caring how readers will react. Sudden changes in the middle and end, in particular, will throw a reader off and they may end up disgruntled over the fact things changed in such a drastic way with nothing to indicate something like that could happen. So, take that into consideration when incorporating drastic change into a story.

While we know change is inevitable, and change in a story is going to happen as well, it can still take us by surprise. Then we are left with trying to make a new norm out of the broken pieces. Which works until the next change comes along. The good news is: it gives us something to write about.
