The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight some of the current contests and activities on the site, help educate members on how to host contests and activities, and provide clues to submit quality entries to contests. Write to me if you'd like something in particular covered.

Commitment.
It's a simple word. Yet it seems like every day this word becomes weaker and weaker in our societies. The internet makes it so easy to say things you don't mean without repercussions. You can't see the other person, you can't tell if the words you just typed hurt someone's feelings, and most of all you can not see their anger if you go back on your word and fail to do something you promised. A person can say, ah so what...it's just the internet.
It happens all the time in contests and activities. People get all excited and sign up for things and then don't complete what they joined. Worse, they might be on a team and let a few people down with their lack of good judgement. It's truly had to lose a participant, when you put a lot of time and effort into your contest or activity. I have one contest that is deceptively simple, and I even warn people that the length of the contest is the challenge. And yet every time, I have people drop from the contest, some only days away from completing the challenge.
The saddest part for me isn't that I lost a contestant. I understand that circumstances come up and people don't have the time they thought they would. It's the fact that I had to turn away members who wanted to join in the beginning because I filled the quota of contestants for that round. Another member could have played along and finished along with the rest had the situation been different. I
In summation, when looking over the cool contests and activities our members are offering to host, keep in mind the commitment necessary for each one, and if they are long term, decide if you can truly stick with the activity to the end. Not only will the contest/activity host be proud of your tenacity, perhaps award a prize to you, but you'll feel proud of yourself for sticking with it, even though there were moments you wanted to throw up your hands and quit.
So keep in mind your commitments, and Write On!

Excerpt: Most of us, if not all, have read that one story that moved us. That story whom's words cut into your chest, pressed their greedy syllables between your ribs, ripped out your still beating heart, and threw it onto the ground. As you lay there gasping, begging for relief, they light it on fire and dance around your flaming heart in glee. These are the stories that make you think! They encourage you to grow and become a better you just because you were gifted the right to read these words.
They leave you to wonder. Can you write a story like that?
Excerpt: What is free form or free verse poetry? Well, the formal definition is poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set fixed metrical pattern. But the exact definition is written by the poet. Free form poetry has become the favored form for new and experienced poets alike. It provides the freedom of creativity, without the structure of traditional poetry.
However, it is deceptive in its simplicity, and can actually be very difficult. Do you have the skill to conquer this form of poetic expression? Have you mastered this art? Or do you just want to see if you are on the right track? This contest will put those skills to the test, and give you valued feedback from qualified judges. The prizes aren't bad either.

This contest uses only spoken words or internal dialogue!
(Please, none of that he/she said, no "background"-- just dialogue! Hence the name! Write like people speak. Use contractions. Flavor with accents. Branch out. When writing dialogue, anything goes. Throw out all the rules of grammar you've been brainwashed with, write like people talk! )
Excerpt: Both new stories and poems accepted- 2000 word limit on stories, 40 line limit for poems! Please include word/line count with the entry. Fiction wanted.

Seshat  answered: Hi, I wanted to travel for Christmas for a change to go see family and have them do all the work LOL I just wanted to visit and eat and shop.
Mary Ann MCPhedran  added: My reviewing has helped me in my gaining confidence and friends, but I still have a problem with the adding a chapter to the book I'm writing 'Just Before Dark.' I will continue to write it. I'm having fun with the challenge and have made friends. |
