About This Newsletter

Often adventure is seen as something that a person must travel for, or plan widely for. Perhaps adventures can take place in everyday settings and it's about the way they are perceived that makes them so!

Letter from the editor

Often when I think of action and adventure, I find myself thinking about those huge journeys that people undertake like Bilbo in The Hobbit or Frodo in Lord of the Rings. I think of Katniss Everdeen and the Maze Runner series that seemed to stretch on and on and in some cases, become wearisome for the characters.

However, it occured to me yesterday while out paintballing with work, that there can be action and adventure in the everyday life. We don't have to set out for days on end in order to bring excitement to ourselves, but we can look around us.

Going paintballing with work, we had two members of staff and six residents. We drove about an hour to get there and got kitted out (I could have done with some extra armour judging by my now very big bruises!) and just taking that small trip out gave us something very different and very action-packed! I ducked, dodged and weaved. I screamed and shot paintballs and I had such a good time. I was transported into another life. I was a warrior, a protector looking after my base. I was a team member. I was a medic. And most of all I was having fun.

When writing about action and adventure, perhaps our characters don't have to travel as far as we thought or complete an epic quest to get a sense of adventure. Maybe they just take a step out of their ordinary lives.

Why not try writing about some closer to home adventures? Or write about action that takes place in the everyday setting.
