Best Laid Plans
I've known for at least six months that I'd be going on vacation to Hawaii in October. So I planned accordingly to complete all the projects--work, personal, writing ... anything I could think of--before leaving.
For example, I knew when all the current commissioned woodworking projects had to be completed. I ordered materials so I could begin each project as scheduled, and I knew basically how long it would take to finish each one. After all, I've been in business for 23 years. I'd like to think some of that experience works in my favor. Still ... the thing about custom work is you get jobs that are very often NON-standard. One-of-a-kind projects that need special ... and intense attention. I ran up against one special project just in time to increase my stress factor with a due date just before my scheduled trip.
I also knew when my newsletters were scheduled. This one, for instance, is due the day before I fly out. No worries, huh?. I would just knock it out the weekend prior. Ha!! Throw in an out of town wedding, and some other unscheduled work added to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.
So, how do you plan our writing projects? Do you create an outline? Do you list each character and his or her traits on separate index cards? Do you just start writing, unsure where you're going, or how you'll get there? What do you want your readers to feel? What do YOU want to feel? You need some sort of road-map to know what you hope to accomplish with your story.
You've heard it before--keep a notebook with you at all times to jot down thoughts that occur often at odd times. Don't rely on your memory ... no matter how young you are, or well trained you think your mind is.  You don't want to miss that one idea that sets everything in motion for your story.
Good luck in ALL your writing endeavors. Oh yeah, I did finish up that kitchen project before I had to leave. And this newsletter should be out on time. (Nothing that a few extra hours won't fix.)  |

From Lucinda Lynx : Thank you for this kind newsletter. I like this very much. I live in a country called Finland. This town is very small. There may be one community of writers, but I haven't dared to contact them. I know I should. Why? Because they're Finnish, just like me. They speak the same language I do every day. It's awesome to have some English people giving me feedback online. I'd like to have some Finnish people giving me feedback too. I had such people in the past, but now those contacts have faded away. I do my best to keep my English contacts, so that I'd have even *someone* giving me feedback. Even some feedback is better than no feedback at all.
I'm glad you're able to use the contacts here at Writing.Com to help with your English. We do not have an easy language to learn. I suspect there are many sites from which you can receive feedback on your writing, though I believe ours is the best.  Best of luck with all your writing endeavors.
