Touch is one of those senses that can be important in romance but not everyone appreciates the invasion in their private space. It can help or hinder a romance and not all characters will have the same opinion on the subject. What does your character think? |

Here is the thing: I'm not a touchy feely person, at all. My sister, on the other hand, loves hugs and such. I spent a week visiting family recently because we had a wedding to attend and I hadn't seen everyone in a couple of years, so it was a nice trip overall. My sister spent part of our time together hugging me or getting really close to try and take selfies of us together. (I also don't take selfies.) Since it had been a while, I put up with it but was happy when my bubble, aka personal space, was no longer invaded. But as a romance writer, it did make me think a little of my characters.
I'm not the best at using the senses in writing, which I've stated in a variety of newsletters, but when it comes to romance, the reader feedback tends in my favor when it comes to touch (not the other senses though). Good to know at times since the genre does have some use for the act of touch considering things like kisses and such are big moments in the stories. Also shows that you don't have to enjoy the same experiences, or even have the experience, to write something.
However, this doesn't mean all of the characters have to touch or even enjoy the physical contacts on a regular basis. It all depends on the individual characters, their interactions, personalities and the overall story.
One thing about having a less touchy/feely character is that you might have to think out of the box a little in order to show the love both to the characters and the readers. While we're used to the big moments of a kiss or even a hug, there are other ways that might mean just as much to the main character.
Plus, if there isn't a whole lot of touching and such in the story because a character is more withdrawn to physical expression, when it does happen that can make the moment even more strength and power. A character who doesn't quite get the appeal of hand holding or even a kiss, will have a different reaction and experience but that doesn't mean they can't have that romantic element, it just means the way you write their reaction may differ. It still can be a big moment in the romance though.
So, whether the character likes being touched or doesn't quite get the appeal, there is potential either way when it comes to the romance. Having a character who is a little less touch orientated for how they express love might be an interesting way to go. If you try it in a story, let me know. Either way, have fun and write. |

Does your main character like to be touched and does the fact come up in your story?
Last time, I wrote about season and how they can be used when coming up with romance stories. I'm a fan for season writing and contests, as each has its own draw for romance situations and one person had a comment on the subject as well.

In reading, I love a good holiday romance, so winter is my preferred season. In writing, I set the season/seasons according to the story and characters. If I've used one above the others, I'd have to guess summer, but again, it's what the story dictates.
