Love in Your 20's vs. Love in Your 30's
My boyfriend and I recently started watching comedian Aziz Ansari's new TV show Master of None. At first, I thought it was a show dominated by male humor, but I quickly learned I was wrong. We both could relate so much to scenarios that Ansari portrayed, some of which were based on his real life. The show is a glimpse into what it means to be in your 30's in America, complete with rocky careers, relationship drama, and weirdness with aging parents.
Last night, we watched the final three episodes of the first season, including one in which Aziz Ansari's character moves in with his girlfriend. We both saw in front of us pretty much an exact parallel of our lives since we've moved in together. She was a slob who left things all over the bedroom floor (that's my boyfriend) and he was a total neat freak who hated it (that's me!) They fought over the same things we do, and even had an argument when Aziz didn't tell his traditional Indian parents that his girlfriend had moved in with him. Another episode had to do with the whole idea that once you hit 30, you're expect to date in order to find your life partner. Aziz spent much of that episode wondering if he and his live-in girlfriend were meant to be together forever. These episodes really hit home for me, and it made me think about how dating in your 20's is so much different than dating in your 30's.
I'm 32 now, so I'm of that age where I theoretically could have been dating half my life. (I didn't start dating when I was 16, for the record.) Actually, I've been dating for about 10 years, and despite the fact I haven't had lots of boyfriends, I see the differences between the way I dated when I was 22 and the way I date now. It's true that I feel some of that pressure to "settle down," but I'm also resisting society's pressure to do so. That doesn't change the fact, however, that I'm at the point in my life where I've committed to one man, rather than dating around. Dating in your 30's has such a seriousness to it that dating in your 20's does not. I used to be happy going to the movies and eating pizza, whereas now I prefer to stay at home and watch Netflix on the couch, interspersed with arguments about cleaning the apartment and the occasional trip to a play or a symphony concert. I used to be in a long-distance relationship, and I was completely cool with that, but now I'm relishing in the feeling of being almost TOO close to my partner on some days! In our 30's, our entire life focuses changes, and the way we date reflects that.
I'm curious to think, because I'm not planning to get married anytime soon, how I will "date" in my 40's!
