Entering to Win
I received some feedback from my last newsletter, and donnasmith sent a question and I thought I would share it with all of you. She asked "I wish to write and be able to submit or enter submissions for possible cash returns. Any suggestions....i.e.contests, special subject matter needs, etc.
First things first, I don't know of any contests or activities from members that offer cash prizes. If I'm wrong, please send me the link and I'll promote it. There is always a way to make cash from your writing if you're careful about entering contests off site. And that's the beauty of it, you enter a fun contest here and then when it's over, polish up that story until it shines like a fire truck in a parade and enter it in a cash-bearing contest somewhere else.
Obviously, you have to be careful about any rules about previous appearances of the story on the internet but many contests allow such entries. One of my contest entries from years ago has grown into a full size novel I hope to publish. I'm sure many of you have similar stories. And there are lots of magazines looking for specific stories for their publications. Some are REALLY specific. Like they want stories about horses born and bred in Kentucky. Things like that. They can ask for fiction or non-fiction, it's really individual to the publication. The hard part is finding the contest. If you happen to live in Kentucky and wrote a fun anecdotal story about your uncle's horse, you would have the perfect entry for publication.
There are a lot of publications like Glimmer Train who take submissions several times a year. The trick is to find the very best qualified publication for your story or poem. Many places charge a reading fee to enter a contest. So instead of sprinkling your hard earned cash around, be particular. The more legitimate contests will tell you the exact prizes, the judges and any sponsors. They should also show previous winners, right? Some contests can also charge a submission fee. This just pays for the clerical work of organizing a contest and doesn't help pay for judging or subscription to the journal. Google "reading fees" and see what info is out there for you. Then search for publications looking for submissions. You might have the perfect story written already, or one simmering in the author pot that's ready for the hard drive. Either way, be prepared. Know where and what you're doing with your work. It saves a lot of disappointment.
So hey, instead of endlessly trolling Facebook for ancient memes, take a few minutes and invest in yourself. It might pay off.

Excerpt: I want to read a story or a poem which uses 20 or more titles or names throughout. There will be different prompts every round on what I want to see, such as I might want Song Titles, or I might want TV Titles, or perhaps Names of Authors, so look for the prompt for the round you are entering. Stories not to exceed 1600 words.
Excerpt: The contest is quite simple. I want to hear your dreams. Not just the run of the mill dreams, where you only remember bits and pieces. I want the dreams that have made an impact on your life, or the dreams that you remember the most. I want them presented neatly: short story, prose, poetry, essay style or you may just relay the dream--but if you do, please make sure it's easily followed. Sometimes there may be prompts which will more and likely be genre based. There will be also be times I will decide I want all entries in a certain form only. So make sure you check the prompt area, carefully!

Excerpt: Welcome to the What's Your Line Contest! This contest is based on famous lines from classic movies. I love movies in general, but the classics hold a special place in my heart. This contest will cover movies as far as the early nineteen-thirties to the late nineteen-nineties. This contest will run from the first of every month until the last Friday of every month.
