This will be the last one, which means all of the genres will have been covered.
Technology - If your article or story has anything to do with technology, this might just be an appropriate genre. I would say that I wouldn't necessarily put science fiction in this genre because of the nature of science fiction in general. However, if one does so, it isn't really inaccurate. I would put more current or future technology sort of articles in here. iPads, phones, how technology has affected our lives, etc. would be good topics.
Teen - Is your story aimed at our changing hormonal, dramatic, passionate age group from 13-18? Then it goes here. It doesn't necessarily have to have a teen as a main character (though it helps them connect to it), that's not what the genre means. It simply needs to be the target audience of your story or article. Trust me, it is a large readership group, and actually a large membership group of WdC, as well. So, likely a good group to angle toward.
Thriller/Suspense - Thrillers are aimed at the emotions. They should provide rushes of emotion, excitement, and suspense - quite a feat in written word. When it is accomplished, though, it is simply amazing. It can be hard, however. Oftentimes this is reached in movies using music, shadows, or sounds in the distance. This is something we don't have in books, so you have to be a bit more imaginative.
Tragedy - The person I think of when I think of tragedies is William Shakespeare. Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet... Shakespeare had a knack for making us watch everyone we'd grown familiar with die all at once. The tragedy genre simply matches the definition of tragedy.
Transportation - It's a bird, it's a plane, it's.... well, for this genre, it's not Superman. And it's not a bird. But it certainly can be a plane, or a car, or a train, or, or, or... there can be a lot of ways to approach the transportation genre. I have to admit, though, that I have seen few items that properly fit into it.
Travel - It is interesting that Travel follows Transportation in the genre list, because they are so closely related. Travel, however, not only includes the means of movement, but also the destination, the company, the sites, the smells, and the sounds.
Tribute - A tribute is something intended to be dedicated to someone or something. Most tributes I have seen on the site have been to a family member or friend who has passed away. Tributes are touching most of the time, but not always.
War - With Memorial Day coming very soon, I'm expecting to see an increase in War stories on the site. Oftentimes, the approach of a holiday will inspire people to write, which is fascinating and awesome at the same time. This genre can be paired with Tribute, or perhaps even Biographical, or Personal.
Western - Bonanza! There's some awesome western writers out there - we all think of gunslingers, wooden sidewalks, parasols, hoop skirts, bonnets, and gun fights. It's a fascinating genre.
Women's - This genre has such a large number of items. There could be stories, articles, poems - so many ways to approach this genre. I actually took a class in college called "History of American Women", the papers I was required to write in that class would have fit well in this genre, as well as in several of the other genres.
Writing - I was very naughty about this one when I first joined the website. I noticed that things that had the "writing" genre were featured on the front page, and so I told myself that if I was writing it... certainly it fell under this genre! ... but I knew it really didn't. I since have gone through my items and adjusted the genres to make them more accurate to what they actually are. The Writing genre should contain articles about writing, thoughts about writing, or other such things.
Writing.com - This genre should only be used if the item has something to do with WdC. It could be a personal opinion about WdC, of course! But it should pertain to the actual website in some manner.
Young Adult - This one is rather - well, to me, I happen to like Young Adult a lot. Young Adult is generally a genre aimed toward the pre-teen and teenager age group. It is faster paced, shorter sentences than those aimed at adults, and it can range from very dark to very light. I quite like the genre, personally, though I am no longer considered "young adult". But, we won't talk about my actual age. Let's just say I've been 28 for quite a few years now. |
