Introduce Yourself

I must say that having been a member of Writing.Com for almost eight years, I have precious little to complain about with respect to this site (other than personally, I seem to have less time these days to write). I believe, however, that the first thing a new member should do after joining is to introduce him or herself. Take a moment, even before posting your first story or poem, and complete your Bio-Block and Biography tab.

I'll go so far as to say your first story should be your introduction.

But, you say, it's easier to post a story than to compose something about myself.

I have to agree, especially with all the changes made on Writing.Com for uploading stories to one's Port. Also, I suspect you want to make a good impression when you introduce yourself. I get that. Two things: Introducing yourself is the first and most important step toward networking with other members, and what you pen in those areas can easily be changed if you come up with something better.

I find knowing a little about the writer helps me understand the story or poem I'm reading. For this newsletter, I highlight authors who have completed one of both of these introduction areas. Some of you introduce yourselves in the forum. Often, that very introduction can be copied into your Bio-Block in your Portfolio tab.

How do you complete your Bio-block?

First, the Bio-Block is that text area located at the top of your Portfolio page (the main page that opens when you log on to Writing.Com). It's right of your Cover image (or the place where an image might go). Open this block by one of two methods: click on the gear (*Gear*) located at the upper right corner of your Port page, OR click on the Edit Bio link located just below your Cover image and Handle in the upper left column right below the Search box. Either method will open a text box allowing you to write whatever you wish up to 650 characters.

Your post should meet the 13+ rating or less, and the text box will accept some basic WritingML features, including text attributes, color, justification, font type and size. Experiment with how your text looks by trying different features. When you've finished adding your text, click on the Submit Update button to save your work. To exit the window, click once again on the gear icon.

You can edit your Bio-Block as many times as you wish.

Your Biography tab is the third tab of your Portfolio. Access this area by clicking on the gear icon at the top right corner. Complete only the boxes you wish and click on the Submit Biography button to save them. It's that simple. Any boxes you leave blank will not show up on your page.

Once again, you can edit this tab as often as you wish.

Take the time to tell us a little about yourself. I'm certain you'll find others with very similar interests that you can use to help you on your own writing journey. Oh, and by the way, even seasoned members should re-visit their Bio-Block occasionally Update. Let the rest of us know what's changed in your life. Best of luck, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "Community Recognition.

From LinnAnn -book writer : I never learned how to 'refer' people other than to give them my business card with my WDC address and tell them how great the place is. I know I had a hard time; still do, figuring out things here. A recent new member was having trouble and I couldn't help him. I asked a couple of blue cases if they could help him and suggested the non-technical place.

I never knew 6 years ago what the numbers by my name were. Took months until someone told me about them, so thanks, lol
love, LinnAnn

Not everyone knows all the answers ... except maybe The StoryMaster . *Wink* But you were able to refer that person to one of the tech forums or to another member who might have an answer. And that's helping too.

From Jawhar : Thank you Jace for the newsletter and for defining Community Recognition. Helped a lot. Hope to hear more from you.

You're welcome. Let me know if you have any other topics about which you'd like to know.

From Naveed : I'd like to submit this essay of mine. I feel that it can use some publicity, for it needs to be read by people. There are few better platforms for newbies, like me, than this newsletter. I hope you'll give it a read.
