About This Newsletter

As a dyslexic writer, I understand how scary it can be to put yourself out there for others to read your work. But, it is something every writer needs to do. Whether your submitting to a publisher or posting here for the WDC world to see, you have to get over it eventually or die forever in obscurity with your children wondering why Momma/Daddy never did anything with their work.

The purpose of my newsletter is to entertain a bit, if I can, but it is also to help you look at writing ideas as a new member you might not have thought of. To address issues every writer faces at some point in time so you know your not alone. On occasion, I will throw in a WDC technical issue on how to find your way around here or the ML. What I won't do is give you something that bores me. Yes, I know there will be spelling mistakes. I won't use every their, there or they're correctly. I may spell collage when I mean college. But, what you will get are real answers to problems I have conquered and some I'm still struggling just like some of you.

My one and only goal is to help our new members feel like the belong, because you do. Different ideas are welcome. Different styles are welcome and yes even if you have in the past spelled cat K A T out loud and thought you were right or struggle to let characters lead and the plot follow, you have a place here on WDC. None of us are prefect. We all struggle and we are all here to help each other in that struggle.

Friends have jokingly suggested that I drank the WDC kool-aide. I will happily agree. I did and I am so glad I did. Here is to all of our new members finding their writing home with us as well.

Quick note: I lost my editor, He's moved three hours away and has very little internet access, all for the love of a girl. So please bear (or is it bare) with me there will be mistakes. I'm doing the best I can.

Letter from the editor

First, let me send an early Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there on WDC. I hope you have a wonderful one. This newsletter is sandwiched between two holidays, May Day (Beltane) and Mother's day. The first is an old religious holiday of fertility. Much like Easter or Ostra it was converted to fit into the developing Christian culture and now is pretty well overlooked in the US. There isn't much call for fertility rites these days. The other is a non secular holiday that hasn't even been a holiday that long. Someone thought it would be a good idea to celebrate all mothers and set out to make it happen. Some might argue that like Valentine's day it is more a card industry holiday than a real one. But, what mother doesn't like a nice card?

Knowing this newsletter was coming I started thinking about its timing and how many books I have read that actually include holidays. There aren't many. A few romances set around Christmas that use Christmas more like a prop than a holiday. It's more common to find them mentioned in novel series than just singular fiction novels. The two that stand out in my mind the most are Harry Potter and J.R. Ward's Brotherhood series.

In Harry Potter she takes known celebrated holidays and uses them to help keep track of the passing of time but it also is a wonderful way to get to know the characters better based upon their reactions to the festivities. J.R. Ward however chooses to have similar holiday's and ones that don't match modern traditions because her vampires have a whole different creation story than any human group on earth. She mentions human holiday's and compares them but her holiday's outside of her version of Yule seem to be completely their own.

We as writers have the freedom to include holiday's in our regular fiction that help nurture and develop our characters and story but we are also free to create a vast number of them that fit in with our fantasy and sci-fi. So the next time you set down to write a story, consider setting it during a holiday, real or imagined. You and your characters might both enjoy it.
