Letter from the editor

While romance is it’s own genre, there are several popular sub-genres that appeal to readers. There are:

Contemporary
Paranormal
Fantasy
Historical
Vintage
Erotica
Suspense
Military

There are many more sub-genres, but these are the ones that have stood the test of time when it comes to popularity.

Contemporary: the setting is the 1970’s to now. The love story enfolds in the modern day. The couple faces modern struggles and conflicts.

Paranormal: the time period can vary with the paranormal, but struggle/conflicts involve either the hero or heroine exhibiting paranormal elements; such as one is a vampire, werewolf, shape shifter, or witch.

Historical: This story is set in the past, traditionally anywhere between Roman society on up. It can be set in any country. The author must do his or her research to sound authentic to the reader. The couples’ challenge is usually overcoming historical norms that are no longer relevant in today’s society.

Vintage: This romance is set between 1900-1970. The most popular stories in this sub-genre involves World War II romances.

Erotica: the focus of this sub-genre involves sex. There are usually a lot of steamy love scenes in these stories. The couples’ conflict? Can “just sex” lead to love?

Suspense: Romantic suspense is a great sub-genre to transition to mainstream writing. There’s usually a mystery or a crime to solve for the hero and heroine. The conflict can involve their methods used in solving the mystery/crime.

Military: these romances have surged as of late. The appeal? A navy SEAL or an elite member of the Armed Forces are usually the hero dealing with the challenges of the recent Iraq/Afghanistan.

Question for you: Which romantic sub-genre is your favorite? What’s your favorite romantic novel?

Feedback for my Newsletter DTD: 27 APR 2016:

Monty
My favorite is When Doves Cry. This was a very good newsletter.

Quick-Quill
I lived in MN for many years during which Prince grew to popularity. I heard Purple Rain and 1999. It wasn't my type of music more for my daughter. What I did admire was his lack of drama in his life. He seemed normal. My Prince story is: I worked for a woman's clothing store at MOA. One of his drummers came in looking for a certain style. He mentioned he was in Prince's band. We had a particular outfit that had flowy pants, a sheer blouse and a knee-length vest. He tried it on and bought it. My claim to fame. There is a love relationship between Prince and Minnesota. He was supportive of his home state. In turn they loved and supported him back. Best love story ever.

Princess Megan Rose GOT Fox
Purple Rain is my favorite Prince song. I have been listening to him all week and shedding tears. He was great. I love that you used my Cinderella item and talked about Cinderella and Prince. A great newsletter.

StephBee - House Targaryen is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. Her latest romance is "A Princess is Always Right," Book 4 in the Windsor Diaries steampunk romance series. 5 Stars, Liz Gavin, Amazon Reader: ‘A Princess is always right’ is a very well-written story with likeable characters and lots of adventure. I recommend it for fans of fantasy and/or good books.
