Occult Series - Part 2
Last month, I did a little introduction to the meaning of occult. It covers a wide series of meanings, so I thought I would do a few newsletters covering a few topics within the meaning of occult. This month's newsletter is on black magic. Now I know, some authors wouldn't touch the topic with a ten...erhm, twenty foot pole. But while doing the research for this newsletter, I got lost in reading information on web pages. I won't vouch for any truth in what I read, but I can freely admit, it gave me a TON of ideas for stories. Anything that stimulates your imagination can't be all that bad, can it?
Black magic operates most effectively in preconscious, marginal areas. Casual curses are the most effective. ~William S. Burroughs
We've heard songs, poetry and stories talking about black magic. What is it? The short definition is someone summoning the devil or evil forces for evil or selfish purposes. It is used to explain supernatural forces, strengths and powers. Oddly, politics came to mind while reading the definition.  I found a cool site, giving some definitions, if you take a look, please understand this isn't a verified reference source. But a really fun read.

I wandered into references of numerology, paranormal, dousing, luck charms, palmistry and more. As always, it's easy to imagine the extreme rather than the benign. I'm not sure I'd try a spell, but if I was desperate, I could see mumbling a few words and give it a try. But really, what if things go sideways on me? Who do I call? How do I undo something? Yeah, I'm not sure I'm qualified. You've never seen me in the kitchen with a new recipe.
But have a look, see what you think and don't blame me if you're tortured with new story ideas. As always, Write On!

Excerpt: About twenty minutes north of Cedar City, Utah on Highway 91, the Eastman Bros. Circus caravan came to a halt because of the hazy form of a horse in the middle of the road, shimmering in the heat. Larry Eastman—Pops to most of us younger ones—had slammed on the brakes of his pick-up truck, causing Carl’s head to slam into the dashboard in a rude awakening. Pops said he dismissed the image as a mirage and, perhaps, symptoms of his insomnia. As he lifted his foot off the brake, however, the fogged horse—pale, he said, pale with a dark soul—shrank to the shape of a large dog, then thinned and stretched up onto two legs before refining itself into the form of a buxom woman. Carl, Pops’ twin sister, later confirmed his story.
Excerpt: It was a handheld mirror, and it was beautiful in its simplicity. The frame and handle were copper, still shiny but clearly not new. Around the edge of the glass, the frame had a simple design of basic vines wrapping around it. The back of the frame had a beautiful painted design of an orange flower that Augusta didn’t recognise. The glass itself, while the frame appeared a little older, shimmered as though it were new. She couldn’t put her finger on why, but something about the simple item seemed incredibly beautiful.
Excerpt: Growing up in the Happy Acres Trailer Park in Allen, TX, was not idyllic by any long shot, and some days could be worse than others. The day Titus turned seven was neither festive nor special in any way. It started out just like all hot days in summer.
Excerpt: Rules didn't seem to apply to Janus - they just slid off him in a stream of trusting forgiveness. Perhaps it had something to do with the way he carried himself, like a dapper, kindly grandfather. She lay upon the beach, her tail swishing gently in the low surf. Her wings were folded along her sides, casually laid, and looking like aged leather. The sunlight streaming from above, danced across her scales creating highlights of iridescent blues along her length. It was that length which would frighten men most. She was at least sixty-five feet from nose to tail and those iridescent blues fading to a color so black as to create a hole in the space she occupied.

She never played with other maids, preferring to spend her days in a cold, windowless cellar outside a crumbling stone castle near her sadistic father's farm, practicing her violin.

Excerpt: Sara sat with her among her dolls and stuffed animals, pretending each was a guest at her dinner party. She’d managed to summon some warm milk to serve her guests along with small sandwiches her mother had taught her to create from wind and water. Her guests waited patiently for her to complete each simple spell, as any good dolly and teddy would. Not satisfied with her handiwork, she called out.
