The Paranormal
In earlier Action / Adventure issues I covered parts of the occult such as the definition, black magic, astrology and a funny part about "The Occult Hand". Today's issue, I'd like to introduce a part called the paranormal. Within the paranormal are a few divisions such as dark matter and dark energy. Some of the few things you've probably heard about or seen movies on are extraterrestrial life, cryptids, ghosts, unidentified flying objects and extrasensory perception.
I was intrigued by the mention of cryptids and poked around further, finding that cryptids are plants or animals that have no scientific explanation and could be an anomaly or just an undiscovered species. We've heard those stories about bigfoot, the yeti, Loch Ness monster and chupacabras; don't they just tickle that story-muse and create a new species in your head? We see plenty of TV shows of semi-scientists strapping night vision cameras to their head just to scare the daylight out of themselves.
The mere possibility of the paranormal leaves a wide open door for our creativity to go wild. As long as the story contains enough facts for your reader to feel it's genuine, why not invent something never seen before? Why not bring something out of the woods and into view? Or drop it from the sky and see how we humans deal with something or someone new? Give it some thought, some exploration and most definitely Write On!

Excerpt: "Joy," one of his hands slid into her's so he could hold onto those gentle fingers. "I can feel it so strongly." He brought her hand to his chest and flattened her palm over his heart so she could feel it beating. It was a strange feeling to him as he had never known what it was to have a heartbeat. Not until he had come here. "Can't you feel it?"
Excerpt: Michael pushed through the crowd of sweaty teenagers in black T-shirts, forcing his way towards the bar. The feminine face on a sign outside had appeared welcoming, but as he rubbed his salt and pepper stubble, he couldn't help but feel out of place amongst the youthful clientele of The Angel Inn. Unfortunately, in the backwater hamlet of Gonerby, there wasn't anywhere else he could seek refreshment on this warm night. Once again he wondered if he should just return home and face the music; he was getting tired of his life on the road.

Excerpt: In this quaint, liberal and professional college is an auditorium and the professor is watching as the last few students file down the stairs and plant themselves into their seats. The professor’s skin is porcelain white contrasting sharply with her black suit coat. She wears horned-rimmed glasses that accentuate her exotic and intelligent eyes. Her lustrous black hair is bound tightly back in a double bun. Her name is Elizabeth Nadasdy. She is about five-foot six, thin yet curvy. She teaches English literature, comparative religion, and Latin. Tonights class is being treated to a guest lecturer, Charles Montagne. He is an author, psychic researcher and self-professed expert on vampire lore.

Excerpt: I hated my parents and their stupid birthday parties. All the other kids have Destination Parties. Gretchen's parents flew fifteen friends to Sweden to celebrate her thirteenth. Of course, no one invited me because my parents insist birthday celebrations are family events. Another year to fake joy. The cakes are all the same, from the same bakery. Always the elaborate roses. Thirteen this time. I'll have to fake a delighted surprise. "Oooh. I want the big blue one this year." I tried a smile. Mom and Dad looked uncomfortable, my brothers bored.
Excerpt: “You sure that night vision camera is going to work?” Fallon frowned at the rigged up contraption on his friend’s head. “Just hope the devil doesn’t chase you, because unless you are standing there looking at it, we ain’t gettin’ any pictures of it. Just you're ugly mug screaming as you run.”

Excerpt: Finally, at four thirty, dawn decided to shrug off the restraining cloud cover and yawn into Harold Maranevsky’s startled face.
From the far side of the lawn, something stirred; was rising; was gaining size at an alarming rate.
Harold leaned toward that shaded area, trying to make out some features of the thing, desperately searching for a technical explanation for an object that now appeared to be on its way to becoming larger than their house.
Excerpt: They think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’ve just seen, heard, and otherwise perceived things they can’t comprehend.
It all began when my partner Detective Sherman Helms and I encountered a peculiar set of circumstances surrounding a series of mysterious deaths in our precinct.
The first was old man Gentry. On the afternoon of January 7, his daughter Shawna found his scrawny chalk-white carcass perched on a folding chair in front of the computer she had given him as a Christmas present. When we arrived at the scene, the computer screensaver was displaying the head of a horned goat floating across a background of flickering flames.

Last month's question: Have you ever slipped a phrase into your writing as an ode to another writer?
Sailor M  admits: I'm a fan of Steven King's ability to develop characters, and have been guilty of slipping a few of his phrases into my writing, both in honor, and to see if anyone catches it.
Quick-Quill  replies: Absolutely. I've had to footnote it in case I was accused of plagiarism. Sometimes the common catch phrases pop up in use also.
jim1184  responds: I am late to the party on this one. Great newsletter. When I first saw the title, I was reminded of Conjure Wife,a novel by Fritz Leiber. Where magic is an open secret among women. This is something much more exciting. Inspiring information for writers in search of a story idea. Thanks.
