When it comes to romance tales, it can't all be perfect moments and relationships with no problems. Might work but when it comes to creating a story, it helps to have something go wrong in the name of conflict and plot. Near the climax of the problems, in novels in particular, there is often a segment where things go wrong in order to create the dark moment where the reader wonders how they are going to make things work. A few solutions happen and depend on the story, but the one I'm talking about today has to do with the making of a grand gesture in order to make up for doing something wrong.
This type of situation is seen in romance, was particularly popular years ago in some teen rom-coms then later made fun of in the movie that mocked those. The basics are that the love interest or main character do something that causes the problem to climax.
A few examples of this are:
1. the infamous, dating the person for a bet or for reasons other than actual initial interest.
2. keeping a secret
3. using a situation in order to reach a goal despite the results
And many others but the easiest to see and known in movies involves the use of secrets and/or some type of different reason for showing initial interest in the love interest. The novel I'm working on includes something similar. The secondary MC is pretending to need help because he can't tell his friend about who he really wants to date but that leads to even more problems. After things blow up or hit the fan, then comes trying to find a way to make things better again.
This is where the fix or grand gesture comes in. The character has to do something that is a little crazy and out there in order to prove themselves, their intentions, the depth of their love, etc to the other in order to get the story to a happy for now (or ever after). What they do is where the story gets some uniqueness because it relies on a combination of situation and character. The grandest gesture for one story will not work as well for another. It all varies on what you are writing.
So, have something go wrong and see what you can come up with, what fix or grand gesture needs to occur in order for the romance reader to get their end result. Try out a few things and who knows what you'll write. Even if it's a bet gone wrong, there is a romantic story out there waiting to be written. |

This year I've made personal gifts over gifts bought in the stores. I'm having a friend make a special sports card for my husband. He is the love of my life. Of course I didn't make this one but it is the idea came from me. My oldest son has a new romance in his life. After reading this article my son is making a film for his sweetheart. My other son is my a scrapbook of his photographs he took this past year. Thank you for an inspiring newsletter.
