It is nice to inspire others with your writing. But what is the best way to get your message across?

I don’t know about you, but I find it quite difficult to write spiritual/inspirational items. Sure, I can share my thoughts with you in this newsletter – and you are quite kind to have put up with me over the years – but stories, or poems? That’s a whole different ballgame.
I’ve got a few items related to faith in my portfolio, but to my shame, all but one of them were written about a decade ago. It’s not that I don’t want to write items of this nature, it’s just that I don’t really know how to. Which is weird, because I’ll happily write about all manner of things, from pigeons, to socks, to plush toys trying to find a home. It may sound disrespectful to compare faith-based items to those. If so, it sure isn’t my intention to offend. My point is that I appear to find it easier to write about the weird and the silly, than about matters of the soul. Or maybe I find it easier to get my message across using the weird and the silly, as my pigeon story is about bullying, and the plush toy one is about being unjustly judged, and not fitting in. You probably can’t get away with that in a spiritual item.
And that’s the thing, for me. It’s difficult to find the right approach to spiritual items. I suppose that the first question is what you’re trying to achieve. Are you sharing your own experiences? Are you trying to lift people’s spirits, send a message of hope? Are you questioning your beliefs, and sharing those questions with others? Are you researching matters of faith? Scripture?
I personally find it interesting to read items related to all different faiths. I love to learn, and there can be a lot of beauty in good spiritual items. It is nice to read about when people found something positive in life, something that helped them overcome their struggles. About goodness and kindness and hope and strength. I am also interested in reading items from those who have questions, because I can relate. I have many questions, and have wondered for a long time where I fit in with my beliefs. I know that I am not alone in this, and hope that we will all find what we are looking for.
So, if you are sharing your experiences, or your questions, it may help to know that there are people like me who appreciate your work. And I don’t think that you can go far wrong with items that are aimed at lifting people up and giving them hope – we all need those from time to time.
I think that what I tend to look for in faith-based items is genuine experience, genuine feeling. It may well be different for others – I wouldn’t doubt it – but I prefer to read about how your faith has inspired you, the place it has in your life, how it may have changed you, about your day-to-day experiences with it, rather than items that are more akin to a sermon.
I remember my grandfather telling me about how he found his faith. He’d been brought up in a Christian family, but trauma caused by his experiences as a child in a camp during the Second World War led to his loss of faith. Struggling with PTSD as a young man, his marriage failed, he lost his job, he reached a very low point in life and could have ended up in a terrible place. But one day, when he felt completely lost, he cried out to God about why God wouldn't help him. And my grandfather said he heard and felt an overpowering voice, asking him why he wouldn't help himself. That was the turning point in his life. He spent the rest of it educating himself and helping others, including other victims of trauma, both on a national and international basis. Married a lovely woman. To the very end he did his best to do good. He once told me that his faith balanced the darkness inside of him brought on by the war. I can well believe that – I don’t know how I would have coped with such experiences.
We won’t all have such stories to tell. I know that I don’t. I’m just a person trying to make sense of life and sense of the world around me. Often searching for the words to express myself.
Maybe, one day, I will give trying to write spiritual items another go. In the meanwhile, I encourage you to keep on writing. You never know who you may reach.
