Letter from the editor

Time is one of the most essential things in our life. Most days there isn't enough of it to do what we want, need, or must. Overcoming that is a possibility if you can schedule your day in sections. Then again, that creates a certain type of predictability some of us aren't comfortable with. It simply doesn't seem exciting to have each and every day planned out by the minute. Where's the fun in that?

On the other hand, without at least some type of schedule, a set time frame, or a deadline, things may never get finished. Instead we'd leave it for the next day, or next week. Perhaps even next month or the following year. The problem is, time is limited. Our lives do have an end to them and while that may sound a bit over the top and pushing it, it is true.

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
~ Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield

What you do today can improve all your tomorrows.
~ Ralph Marston

There you have it in a nutshell. It's also something to think about when it comes to certain projects and writings in your daily life. Does it have anything to do with the contests and activities we see around the site and those we run ourselves? Well, yes.

If you're running any of those the end date does matter quite a lot. Most of us are focused on the monthly contests because their time frame is predictable. Two weeks can be quite short. People have other obligations to get to and your contest may take a back seat because of that. One week is almost ridiculous, but not unheard of. Contests with a 24 hour deadline? Insane. Yet, all are acceptable! We have a much harder time following the rules than keeping up with the deadlines. Why? A lot of people work well under pressure even if they don't know it.

My advice to you is, figure out what works best for you as well as those taking part in your activity. You don't want to waste either side's time. Don't be hesitant in asking that particular question. Most of all, don't be afraid to change things up to keep things going.

'Til next time!
