In dating life, for those that have it, there are many points that mark the start. The first spark, the moment when the loud music fades and you look across the room to catch the eyes of someone... or not. The basic point is that there are many different starting points with some being more subtle than the other. One, not usually subtle one that we work on in our romance stories has to do when the characters start to consider the potential. That is, when one of them makes the first move.
There are limited options since most stories are about two characters who fall in love with each other (for the most part). But the different characters, how they meet and all of the other variables help give the variety. So, when coming up with a story we can consider the different options of how either the main point of view character or the love interest makes their first big move.
I've been working on a few stories over the last couple of years that have some things in common. Often the love involves two that started off as friends. At least two of the stories were dual pov, so both characters had a significant amount of time sharing their point of view. And someone has to make the first move, even though the reader can tell both are interested even if it's not always quite on the same level. It has been kind of fun developing the story and characters, getting them up to the point where the one gets the courage to say or do something to put out how they feel. It doesn't always go well but it happens at along last.
What constitutes the move can vary too, not just whether the main point of view person does it or not. It can be an action, such as a first kiss, or even as simple as the character putting it all into words. "Hey, I kinda sorta, well maybe, the thing is I like you." - Dialogue can create a cute moment with how it is developed and the character. All in how you write it.
So, you have some romance going on in the story and want it to take the next step? Who makes the first move? Write it!

Ah well, you know I struggle putting enough erotica into my Quickie entries. I'm really glad the Quickie now takes 'just' romance too - I seem to be able to write that a little more easily. I'm not really sure I see a massive difference between the two now, apart from short stories that might all be about the physical. But... I tend not to them of them as erotica, they're more porn to me. Erotica still has to have a STORY. Also, I like to think that there can be erotica without sex (well, blatant sex); after all, whatever turns you on is erotic, right? For me, erotica=sexy, and sex for sex's sake isn't sexy. PS: thanks for highlighting A Romance Contest. This usually runs four times a year - one for each season. We've missed a few lately but getting ready for summer. May the romance flow!!!!
- I know indeed and it's one I struggled with on a regular basis, especially considering the low word counts. And yes, the story is very important to them, both romance and erotica.
