Letter from the editor

If you have looked at the newsfeed at any point during the last few days, you will already be aware that winter’s coming. The Houses of W.Com are gathering strength to battle it out for the throne. Maybe you’ve already declared your allegiance. If not, or if you have no clue what I am on about, here’s what’s happening...

Every 13 months, a good part of Writing.Com enters the "Game of Thrones [13+]. It is, arguably, the most challenging event on the site. There’s a whole lot of fun to be had, but there will also be sneaky tactics, going hand-in-hand with a good dose of drama. It’s GoT, after all, inspired by George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. That series is everything but cute and fluffy (those direwolves, though... Arya and Nymeria need to reunite, or... they just need to).

Does that mean that I have to have read the novels or watched the TV series in order to participate?

Nopes. It’s not necessary. For those who have, it’s part of the fun, and there may be some joking around about the different Houses and the White Walkers, but you don’t need to be able to understand all those references in order to enjoy yourself.

What’s it all about, then?

Once the game starts, on the first day of August, you and your team will be writing and reviewing in order to earn points. Each year is different, so I cannot give you any specifics, but this being Writing.Com, those are key parts of the challenge. Last year, we were given lists of members to review for each “battle”. There were also different writing challenges to complete each week.

What if I don’t like one of the writing challenges?

You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. It can be interesting, though, to try something new. Last year people who had never considered themselves to be a poet discovered that they could write poetry. That it was even kind of fun. It’s also possible that you’ll try something and find that you don’t like it. I wrote my one and only Western for it. It will remain my one and only Western. *Laugh* But I gave it a go, and now I know for certain that it’s just not me.

As said, I don’t know what it will be like this year, but last year you earned a point per word written, up to a maximum amount. And then you could earn more points if your item placed. The amount of points earned by your team determined the winner at the end of the game.

Can you do any decent writing if it’s that rushed?

Maybe not everything you’ll produce during the game will be of an award-winning standard. I ended up writing several pieces that I am still pretty proud of, however. One of them earned me an Honourable Mention in the Best Short Story category of "The Quills [ASR].

You can get back to it later as well, if you’d like. Give it a few tweaks here and there until you are happy with it. At least the idea is out there, and that’s one more piece of writing you’ve produced that you might never have created otherwise.

Sounds like a lot of work, though... What’s in it for me?

It is a lot of work. There’s no two ways about it. But you’ll feel a real sense of achievement afterwards, because you did it, you made it through! You will also, no doubt, have made new friends, and that’s a good thing, too.

If you want to know about the prizes, however, there are gift points to be earned, and exclusive Merit Badges, and this year there are awards that include Premium memberships!

Okay, let’s say that I am interested. How do I get involved?

There are several teams that are recruiting right now. You can look at their posts in the "Game of Thrones [13+] forum. Or, you can make a post there yourself to let people know you’re interested in joining a team.

If you and your friends aren’t signed up to any teams yet, and you’re all interested in giving it a go, you can set up your own team. Your team will need to have a minimum of eight members, with a maximum of fifteen. You can have ten members actively participating at a time, with the extra five being able to replace members when necessary. Just pick an available banner, and get ready. *Smile*

~~~
I found Game of Thrones to be a worthwhile experience last year. It pushes you, sure, but sometimes it’s good to be pushed. There were a lot of laughs to be had, there was some good writing produced, and it was a nice feeling that there was so much reviewing going on that lots of people around the site benefited from the game even if they weren’t playing.
That’s why I don’t hesitate to recommend it in this newsletter. Have a look at it and see what you think. It may not be for you, but if it is, give it a go and prepare for a fun time ahead.
