On August 21, 2017, depending on where you are, you may witness a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon comes between the sun and the earth. In some places, the moon's shadow will turn the sun into a ring of fire, as the skies go dark in the middle of the day. The total eclipse will only last a few minutes, but a spooky darkness will persist for a couple of hours.

Darkness, especially strange darkness in the middle of the day, is a great setting for a horror story. While some cultures have studied and attempted to predict eclipses for thousands of years, imagine their affect on primitive people who might not have understood why they happened.

Here are some suggestions for a horror story set during an eclipse:

~An eclipse happens without warning, when the moon is not in position to obscure the sun. An alien spacecraft maybe or ???

~Vampires can walk by day for a short time. (Come to think of it, what happens to a werewolf during an eclipse of the moon?)

~Viewing the eclipse causes a strange madness, or maybe strange abilities.

~When the light returns, the person next to you is gone or has changed.

~When the light returns the area of the earth that was in darkness has changed somehow.

~A planet with more than one moon would have more frequent eclipses.

A few common mistakes are made by writers of stories featuring an eclipse. One of the most common is having the time of total darkness last for hours or even days. Unless you have given a reason for this phenomenon, it should only last a few minutes. Also if the story continues into the night after the eclipse, the moon will be a new moon.

Something to try: Write a horror story based on an eclipse.
