About This Newsletter

Some of my all-time favorite writing quotes.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words. ~~Robert Frost

Poetry is a sword of lightning, ever unsheathed, which consumes the scabbard that would contain it. ~~Percy Bysshe Shelley

Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks. ~~Plutarch

I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of Beauty. ~~Edgar Allan Poe

Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before. ~~Audre Lorde

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. ~~Emily Dickinson

Letter from the editor

17 years: that is a long time in the world on online writing sites. So many come and vanish, but writing.com stays and just gets bigger and better all the time! I can't even imagine, for a site that has grown exponentially in the past almost two decades, what The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress have in mind for down the road! But whatever it is, I know it will be amazing!

For myself, I know that my writing has gotten so much better over the past twelve years here. I've learned not to be terrified of dialog. (HUGE, BIG DEAL!) I've continued to learn and practice my craft. Never a fan of poetic forms, I've learned so much about many more than I'd ever known existed. I've learned to be more willing to try new things with my writing. Some pieces were stellar accomplishments. Others ... epic fails! But I tried them.

Writers that I have followed for years now have grown into truly amazing wordsmiths. It is an experience all its own to watch others grow and learn. It is a neat feeling to watch as a new writer learns and hones and becomes such a joy to read. And here at WDC, it happens over and over and over again!

Getting feedback from others has proven itself over and over again to be such a useful experience. It is a given that not every reviewer will 'get' someone's work, and that one does receive some reviews that may not be helpful at all, but the majority truly are! Having that extra pair of eyes is so very important. We become so familiar with our words that the eye glosses over little things. It is super to have those eyes to help us refine our words! The sharing of suggestions, alternate words and patterns helps us all to not only refine and perfect our own pieces, but also helps us all to be aware of same in our work. A win-win situation, for sure!

I've made life long friends here. Some have translated into the real world, face to face friendships that mean the absolute world to me. Others have stayed online or over the phone but are deeply felt as well. I love hearing about fellow members meeting other members. I always get such a kick out of it because WDC is so, so much more than some online site. It is a world, a home, a family. How many other places online can say that? Not many, I'll venture.

Ask & Answer

innerlight writes: Your perspective of your muse is delightful I love this last piece you wrote.

Muses can be persnickety, stubborn, obdurate and sneaky. They can be life-savers, full of warm-fuzzies and give you everything necessary when that deadline is looming large! Aand occasionally, they will roll over, go back to sleep under their rock and leave you hanging. ~innerlight

Muses are like that!
