About This Newsletter

Greetings! I am Happy to be back as a guest editor for this edition! *Heart*

This issue I had fun searching out the reasons people read romance! *Heartp*

“We are all fools in love”
― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

“Love consists of this: two solitudes that meet, protect and greet each other.” Rainer Maria Rilke

"Romance gets disparaged for the happy endings. But all genres have expectations and all genres require narrative resolution. But it's disparaged because it's happy. And if it was important, it would be tragic. Look at Much Ado About Nothing – everybody is happy!" Nora Roberts

Letter from the editor

Read romance? For what reason do we read romance?
Opinions vary and are
Many. Even some men are enjoying the genre, once regarded as "women's" and NON literary!
Authors of romance have fan followings attesting to its popularity
No real Prince Charming yet still a thrill with a satisfying ending
Celebrating relationship, love and interpersonal connections, happy endings.
Evolution of the genre expanded entertainment value.

Hey readers. Romance has been around forever and even when the genre was not really classified as a true literary one, it was popular. Now it maintains that poplarity and with its evolution and more realisitic characters, themes and plots, has gained an wider readership. A number of reasons popped up in my search of the web and author reports.

*Heartp*1. Entertainment and Plot and Variety

Yep, even in the days of the old paper cut out character type, one could be entertained and even laugh at the miscues and cross purposes of lovers. Now, with romance interwoven in many other genres like mystery, paranormal, thrillers, espionage, etc, Romantic themes/settings can be enjoyed inside a more complex dramatic story line for those who like a little more than just a family or relationship story. Romance and love are featured in books for all ages and orientation as well and when well written can point to some "good" advice in relating.

*HeartP*2. Escapism, Down time and Comfort Food

I can admit to this one! Nothing like a light romance, easy to read, not having to think much after a a week of heavy duty study and reasearch. I could spend an hour or so just entering a fantasy world and destress! I did like to read fantasy and hkistorical romance ...but sometimes less complex romances served better.

Jody Hedland, author, says that people want stories that transcend reality to counter real life, wnat inspiration and that good relationships can model healthy skills or the opposite so we may witness the themes in life.

Readers do say that it is relaxing and a way to forget the real world drama and struggles of their lives. Who wouldn't like to go to a Greek island or the moors of Scotland or visit the far off places where many romances are set. We can all dream of a little thrill in the mundane.

*Heart*3. The Happy Ending

Adding to the de-stress can be the knowning that the story will turn out well, something we may not always see in real life situations sometimes. It can be inspiring to some that couples can eventually work out difficulties, get through and heal their life traumas and issues and create a loving balanced relationship. Some romances now are dealing with such real life issues and as expected, reaching happy conclusions. Some reveal it gives them hope and faith in the courage and spirit of humanity. And there is nothing wrong with a emotionally satisfying outcome--they do happen in real life. Why not celebrate the "good stuff"?
Maybe a feel good story does raise our vibrations too so we can get back to our real life with a bit of light hearted ness. Could be like a secret stash of chocolate to have romances under the bed. *Laugh*

As long as we do not get hooked on the dream--- and psychologically keep looking for the "dream" relationship to pin one's happiness on! Darn! There is no Prince Charming. *Shock* *Smile*
That can be a danger for all forms of escapism.

*Heartp* 4. Sex

The concept of sex as a healthy activity between consenting adults can be lovely and some readers enjoy the vicarious experience and thrill of romantic love.

*Heartp*5. Celebrate Love

Romance novels can celebrate love and realistic characters who grapple with issues, and how they can help each there to grow and benefit each other rather than sacrifice one's truth. In "Death Series" by J. D. Robb, the two characters battle their personal stuff and help each other heal emotional scars. I think it is something we would all like to have: someone willing to be in our corner and still be themselves.

As Nora Roberts once said about romance:
"They think they are all about naked pirates or whatever; they don't realise that a lot of us grew up on fairytales, but we did not grow up waiting for the prince and the pumpkin. ...We for someone who compliments us, who we love, who treats us with respect and affection."

In a nutshell, there you have it! But why do you read romance? What genre do you like your romance woven?*Burstr**Heart*

*Heart* Thanks for sharing your gift Azrael Tseng

This is the first romance story I've ever written in my life. What do you think of the title? "Invalid Item

*Heart*StephBee - House Targaryen

Thanks for your look at Nora Roberts. I've never read anything by her. Can you give me a good recommendation?

You are welcome. I really enjoyed her recent ones with the magical elements. The Guardians trilogy is her most recent.

IF you like Ireland: The Dwyer cousins series, or Jewels of the Sun (Gallagher series}

It will depend on what you like. I also liked her Boonsboro series as it mirrors her own rebuilding of the actal bed and breakfast in her town.
