In case of a tie

Let's say you're hosting a contest and judging the entries. There are two entries that you really enjoyed and you can't choose between them. What do you do in case of a tie? Well, you have several options:

*Bullet* Take a break. Take some time away from the contest and entries. Sleep on it or just do something else for a while. Revisit them at a later time and you might be able to see them in a different light, which can help you make a decision.

*Bullet* Ask a friend. Ask someone you trust to read both and give their opinion. You don't necessarily have to let them make the decision for you, but it can help to have an outside opinion to make the decision.

*Bullet* Prepare. As much as you can, it's good to prepare on how you're going to judge. Do you give more weight to creativity? Or to polished writing? That can help you decide, but it's also a good idea to let participants know how you prefer to judge entries.

*Bullet* Declare both winners. The upside to this is that you don't have to decide. It's a good option if you don't have time to break it down and decide. The downsides are: 1. Do winners like sharing first prize? Some might not mind but some want to be the winner, not one of the winners. 2. What do you do about the prize? Do you offer two first place prizes? Or do you split the first prize among the two participants?


Ties can be tough. Personally, I know I've struggled with which entry to consider the winner. I'm sure it's happened to a lot of you! What did you do in your case? Answer below, and thanks for reading! *Smile*
