Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ . I'm one of the three permanent editors of the Noticing Newbies newsletter.
I aim to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here?  Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101" . I was excited and wanted to do everything the same day. Sound familiar? 
You will see my contributions every four weeks, and I hope they help you with using this great site.

I doubt if anyone has gone to work and thought to themselves, “I’ll try to do a week's work today.” 
So, why do people come online and try to do too much? I guess it is because it can be addictive to be around like-minded people and surrounded by the material we all love. I know it is a well-used cliché, but a child in the sweet shop comes to mind. You can take all or none of the following advice, but please give some serious thought to managing your time effectively.
When starting out on this site:
I always advise that a new member reads through the "Writing.Com 101" . You are not going to remember everything, but you will familiarise yourself with the 101, and that will come in very handy when you are looking for answers. Initially, it can help if you set yourself limitations for the time you spend online, and how long you are here. The one thing to avoid at all costs is to burn-out. I’ve seen far too many great people join here and try to do too much in their first few weeks. It’s true that you get as much out as you put in when you belong to our community. Don’t think that means you have to put in as much as you can, as soon as you can. Take your time and enjoy reading work from our many authors, as this will also help you with your writing skills.
Joining groups:
Joining a group can be similar to joining WDC; you jump in and try to do as much as you can. Take your time and get to know about the group and familiarize yourself with the group’s forums and rules. You will start to make friends and enjoy becoming part of our community. Again, pace yourself and don’t volunteer to do more than you can comfortably manage. When you have been here a while, and navigating the site becomes more natural, you will find you have more time and may then decide to increase your activities. By now you will realize what I have said is right. 
Entering Competitions:
If you decide you want to enter competitions on WDC, you will still have to pace yourself! Make time to read the competition rules and ensure your entry meets any requirements set by the contest owner. Jumping in without taking your time to check everything will often result in being disqualified from the contest. If you are entering a prompt based contest, make sure you can complete your writing in the allotted time.
When writing. (Especially novels):
If you haven’t written a novel, I would suggest you research how to write one before you start as it will save you a lot of time in the long run. Get your story ideas written down and keep a notebook handy at all times. (Or a jotter/note app on your phone/tablet.) Editing is one of the hardest parts of writing a story, poem, or novel. You are fortunate that you have thousands of like-minded people at your disposal on WDC. Reviews can help transform your work into ready to publish work. I had a poem published in the WDC anthology, and I can say without any doubt, I wouldn’t have dared to have anything published without the help of my fellow writer’s reviews and advice.
In real life:
You probably manage your day-to-day activities with ease as you create routines for your life. Being online and on WDC will hopefully become a routine you embrace. Just like real life, avoid doing too much and burning out. Know your limitations!
