Writing romance? It's not that simple for some of us!
This week's Drama Newsletter is all about Valentine's Day and romance - or lack thereof.

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Do you have any plans?
Me, not so much. I’m one of those people who likes the idea of it, but who hasn’t a clue about how to actually do romance. It’s not that I mind showing someone that I love him. I enjoy that. It’s nice to cook a good meal, or pick up a treat that I know he’ll like when I’m out and about, and I’ll totally make a cup of coffee without him even needing to ask. I’ll show it in lots of little ways. But that’s not romantic as such, is it? Not like in the movies or in romance novels, which I know tend to set unrealistic standards, but still... I don’t seem to have the kind of mind to come up with anything that would sweep anyone of their feet, and even if I did, I wouldn’t have the guts to carry it out.
I haven’t exactly attracted the romantic kind of guy, either. My first boyfriend, for example, thought that what a girl really wants is to sit there every weekend watching him fix and wash his motorbike. He also lend me his old stereo set so that he could listen to music in my room at the quality he was accustomed to. “Oddly” enough, he was the one and only guy I dumped on Valentine’s Day. Believe me when I say that he deserved it.
In all fairness to the boyfriends I’ve had, I’d be a very difficult person to be romantic with. Throw rose petals around? What’ve those roses actually done to deserve that? Besides, thorns! Take me to a fancy restaurant? My parents have taken me to those when I grew up, so I wouldn’t embarrass anyone intentionally, but I am clumsy and I’d sit there worrying all the time that I’d spill something or knock something over. Even worse would be a proposal in one of those, or in any other public setting, because that’s a whole lot of pressure you’re suddenly facing. How difficult would it be to turn a guy down when people are watching?
My idea of a perfect wedding is as small and easy and quick a ceremony as is possible. I know witnesses are required, so okay, book a taxi, drag along two witnesses, no need for a fancy dress or rings as I don’t wear rings anyway, go in, say the words, sign the document, leg it back out, have some food at my place, done. I don’t need to have all eyes upon me. Hope he doesn’t, either. And I seriously can’t work myself up about flower arrangements, or napkins, or all the million-and-one other things that turn good women into a nervous wreck.
It may be no surprise that I’m not a romance writer. Last year I gave it a bit of a shot. I wrote a few romantic poems for contests. I even wrote a romantic story because of a challenge I drew over at "a very Wodehouse challenge" [E] – which is a very cool activity which everyone should check out when it opens back up. That story won a contest – nobody was more surprised than I was – but that was about the extent of my efforts. I’m much more comfortable writing silly, quirky items or darker stuff.
Making people laugh, or making them want to hide behind the chair is my forte. I guess. We all have our strengths and weaknesses as writers. Doesn’t mean that it’s not fun to try something different. I’d always encourage that. Let’s face it, though... sometimes it doesn’t work out.
