Oh The Irony
In looking for newsletter topics, I often look at the National Days site. Usually it gives me a good laugh, especially when a day is chosen for more than one celebration. This month, February 14 has some obvious celebrations, like Valentine's Day, and National Cream Filled Chocolates Day. The irony is Feb. 14 is also National Ferris Wheel Day, so don't have too many of those chocolates. It's also Organ Donor day, so make sure your ferris wheel is safe!
Friday is Do A Grouch a Favor Day, which was a great reminder for me to mention reviewing. While we all appreciate constuctive criticism, we have to remember that in the long run, reviews are opinion. We can take the technical advice and improve our structure and content, that's helpful. Some reviewers like to give feedback on how a story made them feel. That's certainly something you want to look at. Did your extraneous characters stay in the background or did they try to jump into the limelight? Did the reader feel the emotions you intended them to feel?
Sometimes readers forget that the narrator of the story isn't always the author. If a reader sends a review saying 'sorry this happened to you', or assaults your story because it triggered them, remember that you did your job, you made the reader relate to the story. Sometimes a short response to the review with an explanation can help clear things up. As reviewers, we can remember to impart as much helpful information as we can without trying to change the author's basic story and voice.
In the end, remember reviews are impressions and opinion and as the author, you have the final decisions on what to change or try to improve.

Last month's question: What do you do with your 'nothing time'?
Howler of the Moon  responded:During my "nothing time", I usually browse YouTube or DeviantART. However, there are times where I see a character with an interesting design and think, "I could use something like that in a story." Then I either scribble ideas or create an image collage on Google Drive.
