Have you done anything interesting recently? You will no doubt have experienced interesting times throughout your life. There are always twists and turns. Sometimes, you can see them coming from miles off. Other times, they happen to you unexpectedly.
There will have been times that felt like a great challenge. Perhaps you thought that you were never going to make it through. There will have been occasions on which you were frightened. The fact that you are sitting here, reading this newsletter, means that you did make it through. That you have overcome any challenges that you have encountered so far. Whether you see it that way or not, you are a hero.
Heroes don’t always wear capes. They don’t always have a signal that glows above a city. They don’t have to carry swords, or swoop in on a while stallion. Life is tough. For some people more so than others, but no person floats through never experiencing any adversity. It is how you deal with that adversity that matters.
There’s that saying that you should write what you know. That can be tricky when writing in the action/adventure genre. I have never been face-to-face with a dragon. I have never been in a car chase with criminals. Or, actually, I have been on a motorcycle chasing criminals, but it wasn’t like in the movies. No crashes, no big trucks suddenly blocking the way. We didn’t go flying through the air, either. Guess the fact that the Netherlands is pretty flat kind of puts a downer on that (thank goodness).
If your dragon is the tricky kind, however... I am sure you will have encountered an unpleasant, intimidating person at some point. How did you deal with him/her? Or if it’s the kind that’s up in the air, ready to breathe fire and your hero or heroine is frantically looking around for cover, you can draw on any moment you have lived where you felt frightened and wondered how on Earth you could go through with whatever it was. That’s probably close to what your hero or heroine is experiencing. Close enough, anyway, to describe the sensations of that fear.
Our stories don’t have to be the same as those of our characters. If they were, we’d be writing biographies, rather than action/adventure tales. I don’t know about you, though, but there’s always something of myself in my main characters, and I am sure that some of my antagonists have certain traits that I have encountered in people who have made my life a lot less fun and easy than it could have been.
It can work the other way around as well, to a certain extent. It’s sometimes said that poetry is where we pour out most of our emotions and feelings, and I have certainly poured a lot into mine, but imagining our way through stories can make us imagine our way through our own issues. By caring for our characters, and finding solutions for them, we can find solutions for ourselves. It has happened to me before that a situation my main character was facing helped me face a situation in real life. If that character – that part of my imagination and to some extent my personality – could find the courage to face up to it, so could I.
Whenever you feel down, then, have a look at your writing. Have a look at your characters. You created this. You created them. That says something about you, and what it says is something good. If you can’t find anything else, I hope that at least you realise that anyone who can write a good story is someone who has worth.
