Letter from the editor

*Glassesp*Hi folks! Let's have a quick look at this interesting form, the Nonet!

The short definition goes like this:

The Nonet is a 9 line poem
where the first line containing nine
syllables is followed by
eight syllables in the line
two and three in forth
and so on til
the ninth last
line has
one.

or:

line 1 - 9 syllables
line 2 - 8 syllables
line 3 - 7 syllables
line 4 - 6 syllables
line 5 - 5 syllables
line 6 - 4 syllables
line 7 - 3 syllables
line 8 - 2 syllables
line 9 - 1 syllable

There is no limitation to the number of words just syllables per line.*Wink*

*Binoculars* Now in delving further:

I discovered the Italian word 'Nonet"

In music referred to a
"a composition which requires nine musicians for a performance"

*Questionr* so could the nonet be a form inspired by music?

I am still musing on the possibilities of more modern uses of the word in relation to the poetic form! *Think*

In computer technology, it is a group of nine data bits.

In physics, it is a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum structure with nine peaks and as a set of particles. *Think*

Any thoughts or musings?{entry

*Smile* I find it interesting that while we do not know the originator of the poetic form, the theory is that it is based off the traditional Japanese forms based on syllables.

It is a contemporary form, and has a child like aspects.

*Folderp* Further study revealed:

*Burstgr* Nonets can be on any subject and it need not have any rhyme or meter. Many do have rhyme. *Wink*
Try subjects that are close to your heart!

*Burstr* A nonet has an easy flow and a complete thought.

*Burstp* Each line is usually a complete phrase.

*Burstb* Focus on nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs is preferred.

*Burstg* It is best not to use a lot of prepositions,or filler words just to meet the syllable count. Similar to haiku in this matter.

*Burstp* Each line needs to have meaning – don’t break lines in a way that it does not have a meaning.

*Bursty* A bare minimum of punctuation is used.

*Burstr*It can be written in iambic meter, which means that every other syllable is emphasized.

You can also write NONET in descending format and even do a double stanza!

seven stars glow in the vast darkness
of space as bluish pinpoints,
visible from dawn to dusk.
Fascinating, guiding
seekers of all times,
these Pleiades
cluster closest
to the
earth.

once
observed
by ancient
astronomers,
now known by many
as the seven sisters:
muses, daughters of Atlas;
most luminous stars in our skies
among smaller ones in the cluster.

It is a very flexible form and a fun challenge! My readings of various examples reveal not all of the suggested parameters are always used! *Laugh* I am not a pro and like to play with the form. I find the rhyming and meter a challenge for sure.*Shock*
