Letter from the editor

My mother and grandmother read to me. Among other books, they read Grimms Fairy Tales. As they read, I could visualize the story in my mind. In fact, I once attempted to go into a fairy tale world. I don't remember the name of the story, or the names of the characters. In the part of the story I remember the main character, a young princess, ran counterclockwise around her castle and ended up in another land or dimension. I ran counterclockwise around my house seven times, as did the princess in the story. To say I was disappointed when I finished my counterclockwise run, and was still in my own yard, is an understatement.

As I grew, I migrated from fairy tales to other books with more mature themes. I read romance novels for teenagers, but did not find them as exciting as the fairy tales. I moved on to action/adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I found these books more exciting and interesting than the purely romance novels. I enjoy romance if it is part of another genre, but I normally do not read romance novels.

I smile, when I remember my mother reading to me. She was a single working mother, so she did not have much time to spend with us. However, she took time to read and play with us. She let us help her with the housework so that we could be with her. She read bedtime stories to us when she was not working graveyard shift. The times that Mama read to me are some of my most precious memories.

Did one or both your parents read to you? If so, what types of stories did they read? Do you read to your children or grandchildren? Do you read stories you have written, or do you chose stories by other authors to read? Do you have some children's, teenage, or young adult fantasy or science fiction you would like to share with our readers? If so, please submit them in the section below.

Excerpt: Onyx wandered through a forest she did not recognize. The trees were bare and leaves crunched beneath her feet. A layer of mist clung to her skin causing it to prickle. Where am I? She wondered. She'd been hunting in the forest on her land with her father many times, but this was not that forest. She looked up, and realized there was no moon. She transformed into her hybrid form to gain some form of night sight. The mist soaked her fur matting it to her body. Her panther ears caught the sound of rustling in the surrounding brush.

Jaeyne of the Free Fab Five writes: I do try to describe my boring-ness in a new light - watching clouds, a flying bee, etc as best I can, but I never thought to try this.

What a great challenge, Neva! And I can use it for Nano line count, so this is fantastic. I will mind the rating, I promise. :)
