Group Membership

Ask not what groups can do for you, but what you can do for groups.


Groups are an important part of Writing.Com. They create small enclaves for writers of a genre to congregate within this huge site. If you look at Writing.Com as a big writing factory, then groups are task force teams designed to accomplish small goals that combine to this big writing factory.

Some groups are super welcoming and make is very easy to join. Usually, all it takes is a post in a forum, an email to the group host, or filling out a survey.

Some groups are more selective. Those want the members in the group to have a high level of knowledge.

One thing that is the same for all groups: they only work if those that asked to be in them actually participate in the group activities. After all, in order to join the group, you should have taken a peek at their page to find out what they are about.

So if you asked to become a member in a reviewing group, send some reviews. If you applied to become part in a writing group, write! If you applied to become part in a group that offers some other activity, find a way to participate.

Will groups pay for you membership? Some groups give short-term memberships, but for the most part, groups are not there to pay your way here on the site. However, if you or someone you know ends up in a situation where your membership is in jeopardy, you will be blown away how quickly a group can come together to help a fellow Writing.Com member. So, when you're asked to help out, don't feel pressured to give, but if you can even spare a handful of gift points, it all comes together to make a difference.
