Advice
I'm a big believer in advice. I mean, going with your gut and your past experiences has great value, but I think getting input from others can be a great contribution, too!
In my current job, I was required to take a few hundred hours of courses, and at the same time, I worked under a mentor for two years. Both of those combined really prepared me for my career! Each individually were important but it was also the combination that really worked. In this case, I had no prior experience to rely on, and it was using multiple sources of advice and help that gave me the expertise that I needed to do my job.
Having multiple sources of help and input is one of the reasons I think Writing.Com is such a great resource from writing! I went to college and majored in English. I learned a lot about grammar and technique when it came to writing, but it wasn't until I came to this website that I felt it really came full circle. I really started to understand writing in regards to an audience and reader perception.
I think it's extremely important to take advice from contest hosts and reviewers. Don't take their word as law, but value their input.
I also take this approach when I'm reviewing. I try to offer my advice as one reader. I explain that ultimately the piece of writing is theirs and as the writer, they have the last say in how the work is composed and presented. My advice is just one reader's perspective. I don't feel that any writer (no matter how "good" or famous they are) should be the ultimate expert or that they're always right, but their input certainly has value!
It's a really good idea to give reviews to your contest participants when you're a host. If your goal is to help other writers, reviews are just so valuable that you're doing a huge favor by giving your thoughts. Long, in-depth reviews have their value, but so do some quick thoughts!
It can be hard to receive criticism, but try to keep an open mind when it comes to reviews and advice. It can be a really great tool for any writer!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (May 9, 2018)" ), discussed Unique Contests. Here is some feedback from Newsletter readers:

It is so much fun, isn't it?
I have never written an entry into a contest using a character residing in my head. I always fear that if I use them for a contest, I will have predetermined too much about their characteristics, mannerisms, or situations they end up in, and then when I am ready to put them to use in a longer work they won't fit the part any longer. However, perhaps if I did use them for a contest entry, I could actually begin to develop them and possibly even the beginning of a story line and actually get that longer work in progress that much sooner...hmmm...Definately something to consider! ~ Patrece ~ 
I've felt that fear, too! I think it could be worth a try to see if that fear plays out or not!
