Letter from the editor

It's June and for many of us, that has included an influx of rainbow flags and image for Pride month. The official Pride days, depending on the location were earlier in the month but many topics are up for grabs throughout the whole month and I'm going to take advantage of that and use it for this month's fantasy newsletter from me. This year one of the big focuses was the use of a slogan and it's one that actually works well when considering speculative fictions stories.

Gender and sexual orientation are an option. It's what I tend to incorporate with my stories, whether writing fantasy or any other type of genre. Like any other romantic storyline or couple, there are quite the number of options for conflict that can include but isn't limited to the issue of the love itself. However, while this is obvious considering our focus on who is in love in this world, they aren't the only options.

Fantasy has some good examples where questions and such get brought up due to who either is in love or was in love. A prime example of this is the existence of the half-elf. Common enough to become a bit of its own trope, the half-elf is the result of a human and an elf pairing, which in some worlds can be taboo or in lighter terms frowned upon. Then there is the question of who the half-elf might fall in love with over time. In our time this might be similar to the conflict that has occurred over interracial relationships.

One can even go as far as to consider inter-species when taking on the variety of human-ish or not even really human like characters in fantasy and sci-fi worlds/stories. Granted some can start to get a little squeamish or uncertain when we use terms like inter-species for talking about love, but it does have its place in the speculative world, giving freedom for options in the process of coming up with stories.

The general idea here is out of all of the large scope genres, speculative fiction with the particular of fantasy and sci-fi have the options to explore open and not so open views of love. It can be a source of conflict or not involve tension at all as an element of the world that is developed for the reader. The decisions are up to you in how you show the reader that love is love.

How do you use the concept of 'love is love' in your world/story?


Last month for this newsletter, I talked about settings and in particular that of arbors. Talks of plants, trees in particular and the occasional water front option came up and one comment was sent in over the topic.

In my story setting is part of the telling. The Pacific Northwest is filled with forests and evergreens. I just drove through Tennessee and what beautiful trees and a place for setting. In the area I'm at now it's a hot bed for drug trafficking. I can see why. One can easily find off roads to pass on anything illegal. And paying off the local law enforcement seems part of the culture.

- Nice that you can incorporate the setting. I need to work on that more in some of mine.
